I meant where it is in jazz, whats it supposed to do. Its not the easiest to hear most times.

It's usually just in the background (part of the rhythm section with the bass, piano, and drums) and helps to fill out chords. Occasionally it has a solo.

I just don't think you can answer that question if you treat all jazz as just "jazz". You gotta differentiate a bit.

Like here, guitar isn't supposed to do anything :



And here it does just about everything :



So what kind of jazz band is the guitarist in you know?

Did you think I was asking what guitars role was on Django albums? No I mean when you can see the guy sitting there playing it but he may as well not be. Is he there for sex appeal, or do the other musicians just not like money?
