Is scatting good with modern day music?
hello, I am learning scat singing and i am wondering if it could be used in modern day music like pop, hip hop all that. I am a very big fan of Scatman John and am thinking of making some music like his but more like today's music, music changes very fast these days. Cheers

Scatting as in saying a lot of ridiculous words, right?

Scat can also (rather appropriately) mean feces or eating feces as a sex act.

there's everything wrong with scat (the porn / fetish style). as far as using it with modern styles go, why not? by all means do it up, if it's something you like doing there's no reason it can't be incorporated into whatever style pleases your ears. though i disagree with your idea that music changes very fast, the commercial targets might change (or rehash two generations ago) but then you really need to decide whether you're making music as a form of artistic impression or a product. |
Yes Surell what is right lol

I heard a man once whose last name was Nealand sing scat-style in a very post-modern post-free-jazz sort of setting. Incredible. Changed my whole concept of "singing" forever. He's based out of the San Francisco Bay area and is probably still performing tho he'd be in at least his 50s if not his 60s.

Jungle Drum by Emiliana Torrini utilises scatting (sort of?) in a different and what could be considered a modern context.
Might not be your kind of thing, but it'll hopefully give you some ideas. |

I've got something for you. Check out a song called "Dat Scat" by The Roots. See if it helps in your quest.
