His drummin is the main feature of his solo project, I love it also.

But I remebered another one, maybe is what you are looking for, there is an italian ban called Zu, they recorded an album with Mike Patton called Carboniferous, very furious rock with hints of jazz (they play baritone saxophone in a very furious way):

Liquid Tension Experiment may as well be an updated version of Mahavishnu Orchestra. Maybe too metal for some fusion fans, but I think they compare really well.

regarding jazz-metal, I would also mention Derek Sherinian, Spastic Ink, Exivious, Cosmosquad, 7 for 4, Spaced Out, Panzerballet, Canvas Solaris, Blotted Science, Mongol, Behold...the arctopus, 1980, Aghora, Electrocution 250, Cynic...

But regarding jazz-ROCK, one band fits this thread :

I liked Panzerballet. Just checking out Blotted Science which sounds interesting.
