Read a good book about SRV (can't recall the title right now), he really came up the hard way, and he used VERY heavy strings on his guitar. When he was doing 3 shows a night, early in his career, sometimes he would play the skin right off his fingers. He would take super glue and put a drop on his arm, and place his cut finger on it, and rip the skin onto his finger, so he could continue to play(!).
