I don't know about it being the best ever (it's really hard to choose), but Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is the quintessential Jazz record. If someone's getting into Jazz for the first time, I'd suggest starting with Kind of Blue.

Buddy Rich & Max Roach- Rich vs. Roach

This album has got to be my new favorite jazz album. The whole album is centered around these two incredible jazz drummers, who attribute every song with fills and solos, trading off one nasty line after another. One of my favorite parts about this album is the fact that Buddy Rich's band plays on the left channel, and Max Roach's band plays on the right, providing a wild balance between the two groups of battling musicians.

Wow, this thread is kind of all over the place! :rotfl:

"Best jazz album ever", I agree, is a little like saying, "Best Rock Band ever".

For me, there's a couple:
The Quintet - Live at Massey Hall
Sonny Side Up - Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie
Dahabenzapple - Joe Maneri

"Kind of Blue" always makes me list for "desert island" picks, but it's already been mentioned, so I won't.

i like the really simple stuff;

there's also an australian quartet i had the joy off seeing at a really underground venue last year; it hosts awesome jazz music. it was the "jack slater quartet". i bought their cd for $20, gave it to a mate and he lost it :/ can't really find anything from them on the net.

These last two especially are hardly "the really simple stuff"

Blue In Green has a very modal melody, and the chord progression is genius. Definitely not "simple". Not to mention that Life in a Glasshouse descends into what some might even describe as free jazz at a point. Again, both complex songs.

John Coltrane - 'Ascent'
Miles Davis - 'All Blues'
Charles Mingus - 'Reincarnation of a Lovebird'

It's difficult to do such a thing as usually I listen to albums all of the way through, but I guess sometimes moments stick out. I guess my favorite album would be Coltrane's 'Sun Ship' or Dolphy's 'Out to Lunch', although 'Bitches Brew' is always a favorite.
