Would You Consider this Jazz?

I say yes, my friend says no.

I don't understand how you can't call it Jazz, but I haven't listened to too much.

Your thoughts?

lol. let me fix.

EDIT: Yeah, can't embed, but I guess you can still click the link.

it's not jazz. it's more krautrock, which is in some cases derived from jazz.

so it depends on how technical i get to be.

Alright, cool. I just refer to it as "jazzy" now, haha.

I love the song though.

Roygbiv 04-20-2009 07:29 PM

if you like this stuff listen to Can.

german krautrock band from the 60s and 70s.

more specifically, listen to Ege Bamyasi or Future Days by that band.

you can thank me later.

wait, what the deuce?

i get offended when bands like Harmonia and Deuter get labeled as krautrock, because it's just a half-assed attempt at pigeonholing a German progressive group into a completely disparate genre. and i don't even like the term.

this isn't jazz, and it's sure as hell not krautrock. in case you're unfamiliar, that's the whole 'alternative' nonsense or whatever they're calling it nowadays.

christ i hate genre arguments. i'm gonna go smack my face off tile for a while for getting lured into this discussion.

Well, the song wasn't made "nowadays". I'd just say that it's experimental rock with jazz and blues influences.

Roygbiv 04-20-2009 10:00 PM

they sound like Can.

Can plays krautrock.

Therefore, this band should be labeled krautrock.

Or is my logic wrong?

SATCHMO 04-20-2009 11:44 PM

It's just crap.

mr dave 04-21-2009 01:18 AM

i wouldn't call it crap per se. it's like an alice in chains leftover with a little bit of velvet underground sprinkled over top.

to call it jazz is foolish. just because it has marimba and a double bass doesn't NOT make it jazz. it's a pop song. plain and simple. it connects the dots and follows the patterns. there is NOTHING of this track that even halfway even resembles jazz. it gets lounge-y around 3 minutes in. the sax solo sounds forced and tacked on, hardly an obscure instrument in rock/pop music either.

this is about as jazz as alanis morrissette (as in - not at all)

Yeah, you put it right. I'm a little blind when it comes to genres I guess and still have a lot to learn.

I like the song however.

it's all good we all start somewhere (i used to think sabbath had a jazz angle based on 'planet caravan' haha). that song is a good one. but not jazz :p:

now this on the other hand, is SMOKIN' old school jazz.

YouTube - Art Ensemble Of Chicago theme de yoyo

the difference is less about the instruments used but the difference in how the instruments are used.
