Ascension's better imo, but Sun Ship is probably a better place to start as it's more accessible.

For free jazz I'd say that one and Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come. Probably Cecil Taylor's Nefertiti, the Beautiful One Has Come as well.

Also, taking Frown's advice, I'm playing Ascension. I think it's widely known amongst jazz fans that Ascension has two versions. I'm going with the originally released edition 1, because my music philosophy is that the original release is the real album. I guess I consider edition ii to be a separate album with the same title.

They're paired together as parts one and two, generally.
