I reckon that the best blues is by Robert Johnson- it's easy to find CDs of all his output. This guy is the original, a seminal influence over all that followed. He is raw, basic, unaffected, gutsy, as blues should be but rarely is. He sings like he's possessed by a voodoo charm, his immediate driving guitar playing shows a genius of technique and understanding of the instrument that is unequalled in his idiom, and he really sounds like he knows what he's singing about when he sings about whores, pimping, hard drugs, jumping trains, devilish curses, fast love, etc, as opposed to other singers who are just singing about it- this guy lived it, or at least it certainly sounds like it.
