Not the best pianist I've ever heard (that goes to Art Tatum, who was also BLIND), but damn, the Monk's got style. Definitely one of my favorite jazz musicians, and he could really bring out the best of the people he played with (John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Max Roach, etc.). "Ruby My Dear" is one of my favorite jazz songs.

thelonious monk is amazing.

if you look at the sheet music of his songs a lot of them are very chromatic e.g. well you needn't but when you listen to them they sound almost bluesy as opposed to chromatic.

going up in semitones isnt generally that nice to listen to but monk can do it so that it is totally listenable.

does anybody here know of t.j.kirk? they are a band with charlie hunter who cover rasaan roland kirk, james brown and thelonious monk songs exclusively

I love Thelonious Monk. He's my favourite jazz musician/band. Quite an interesting style of piano.

His greatest hits is great, but his studio albums are good as well.

He's way up there as far as favorite jazz musicians go. Everything he's put out if perfect. There's no other way to describe it. Every single note just feels so right.

I agree, strange thing about him when I first heard him play I thought he could not play well. Then I figured out that he meant to play every note that way.
He is very angular.

There is an amazing documentary movie about Monk called "Straight no Chaser" If you have not seen it do so.
