Hi, I'm the newbie :-)

Hi, I'm the newbie, 36 years old and come from Nuremberg in Germany.

I love music and I love to banter people who like music which I do not like :bonkhead: :D
My favorite music is gothic, ebm/industrial, metal, folk and medieval rock (all the dark arts) but I'm always curious about new input.

I also like to make music myself, I try to get noises out of every instrument I get in my hands. My fave music instrument is the egg shaker.
I just started learning to play the German/medieval bagpipe. And I play the guitar, recorder and I already have learnt two songs on my tin whistle after all, which is always laying around bored.
I'm not a professional musician and I'm far away from skilled, but only play just for fun and in private settings (and to torture my neighbors).

I'm here to come in touch with international communities to bicker with folks with other musical taste and ally with fellows, share experience regarding music making and get new input and inspiration, such as tunes from different regions, appropriate for my instruments. Therefore I joined this forum and am looking forward to what's coming :)

Greetings

Meticus

Welcome to the only internet forum that's not outdated!

I'm going to go ahead and assume you're a 'Lords of Acid' fan - am I right?

And being a fan of gothic, if Robert Smith and Rozz Williams got into a drunken fistfight in their prime, who do you think would win?

grindy 08-06-2020 08:08 AM

Welcome to MB!

Please note that we don't allow new members to promote their music here. I have therefore deleted your signature.

Nuremberg is a cool city. I was looking forward to seeing Swans there this year but, alas, Corona ****ed that up.

Welcome, bagpipes are awesome. Do you have any favourite musicians/bands? And have you accepted Aubrey Plaza as your Lord and Saviour?

Fehlfarben ‎– Monarchie Und Alltag (1980) ... ja oder nein?

I've read where it was voted #1 on a list of "50 Greatest German Albums" compiled by Rolling Stones/Germany. I was curious about your opinion on that. Should it be, or do you think there is another album you think should be #1?

I like some Goth and Dark Wave too -- it depends on the band though. Who are your favorite Goth bands?

I'm sure Rozz would be the winner with his DEATHbringing fists, but Robert could CURE himself afterwards. Besids, I read that Robert once said he'd rather chop his hands off before being honored by the Royals. So maybe he has no fists at all.

Yes, Nuremberg is beautiful and also offers some great musical happenings. But this year it's quite quiet, hopefully it's getting better soon.

Regarding bagpipes my favorite is Tanzwut, followed by Corvus Corax, Saltatio Mortis, In Extremo, Feuerschwanz, Faun, Jar and many many more. How popular are those bands outside Germany? I guess as to the mostly German lyrics not many people outside Europe have heard of those bands.

I don't think there could ever be a single album placed on a number one position. There are countless great albums, every week new albums are released. There are also epic albums produced by unknown artists which heardly anyone will ever hear. They all are distinctive regarding their style and therefore not comparable with each other. Additionally it is highly mood-dependent and subjective. So as to your question I would say no. I think such a ranking is not possible. If someone would ask me for my #1 album I would run away

Basically I'm open-minded but my personal limit is reached when it comes to Rap
Or German Volksmusik (e.g. Wildecker Herzbuben) :shycouch:

Since there are so many genres and sub-genres and I'm a mere music fan and no music genre scientist, for me I group a lot of different artists under the umbrella term "Gothic", including guitar-driven and electronic, Dark Wave, NDH and so on. So at the risk of naming "wrong Goth bands" here a small selection of dark bands I like:
Das Ich, Lacrimosa, ASP, Umbra Et Imago, Deine Lakaien, Ewigheim, Schwarzer Engel, Project Pitchfork, Diary of Dreams, Welle:Erdball, Cephalgy, Goethes Erben, Blutengel, Sopor Aeternus, Adversus, Deathstars, Heldmaschine, Lord of the Lost, Samsas Traum, Mono inc. and hundreds of other bands :D

HEATHEN!!!!!

thanks for the bagpipe recs! I guess they're not well known outside of Germany, but you'll be surprised about the vast music knowledge of many people here (I'm not one of them lol). And foreign lyrics are great

If you stick around long enough, I think we can change that.

I have a friend that listens to aggrotech and told me he won't listen to rap because it's just sex and violence.

One of the stupidest things I've ever heard in my entire life.

I assume you told him as much?

Rap gets a bad rap for some people who've never scratched past the surface and have only seen artists that the media has promoted since the mid '90s.

Rap often times has more lyrical substance and depth than any other genre.

No, because the idiocy took my by surprise.

Even those rappers that tHe MeDiA promotes have more depth than what they're presented as. I have no clue why hip hop has to jump through higher standards than we hold for any other genre.

Very true. "The Media" was a poor choice of words. I think it would be more accurate to say that record companies promoted them, and the media at the time (MTV, radio stations, etc.) would play what was being promoted. I think there are some people (i.e. people who are ignorant of rap) who, when you bring up rap, they have this view of rap as just being this one-dimensional gangsta gangsta sort of thing, which just isn't true.

Listen to any early Ice Cube solo album, or Raekwon's first album, or Jay-Z's first album and yeah, you get insight into their world via raps about crime and drugs, but there's a whole hell of a lot more happening there. And you don't need to get into stuff like conscious rap or backpacker rap to get meaningful lyrics.

It's an interesting question about whether or not there's a different standard for rap/hip-hop compared to other genres. I've known some people that are just straight-up prejudiced against rap because they don't qualify it as "real music" because most of it isn't created with live instruments (these are the kinds of people that begrudgingly came to accept synths in rock music). Of course, these people have little to no understanding of how rap music is/was made, the work and time that went into breakbeats and sampling, and spending day after day digging through crates to find that gem that no other producer had yet found.
