Hi People

Thought I would introduce myself before posting so people don't say "who's the new weirdo?" I've been collecting music for about 30 years. Mostly obscure hard to find blues, psych and prog rock. 1966-1974 seems to be my sweet spot.

I also play the drums. Completely self taught aside from lessons in the third grade.

Do you like The Residents?

Well, I'm not sure. I have their "Meet the Residents" CD which is like a car crash on the motorway. There's bits of stuff everywhere and you drive past slow not able to stop looking. For me they are either "oh that's clever' or "what was the point of that?".

Frownland 03-29-2020 06:50 PM

Welcome to the forum. What are some of your favourite artists or some of the best prog and psych obscurities you've got under your belt?

You might like a lot of the albums that this youtube channel posts: Terminal Passage

Nice answer.

I hope you hang around.

My favorite band of all time is The Who. They started me on this journey. Some of my favorite obscurities would be Shy Limbs and Tintern Abbey from the UK. Hiro Yanagida and Strawberry Path from Japan. Whalefeathers and Salem Mass from the US. Too many to remember.

Thanks! Just checked it out. Pappalardi and Creation! I love Mountain and the Creation, especially Creation's album with Carmen Maki.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Who are you favorite bands? albums?

I like Blues, Psychedelia, Progressive Rock, Acid Rock, Psychedelic Folk etc etc.

One of my favorite drum album is Pre-Flight by Room. It one of those rare records that has it all: Psychedelic/Acid Rock, Blues, Orchestral Rock. Bob Jenkins does amazing cymbal work and his soupy hi-hat is impeccable on that album.

The Who, Humble Pie (Jerry Shirley is an underrated drummer). Small Faces, Procal Harum, Atomic Rooster, Uriah Heep, early Soft Machine, Early UFO (with Mick Bolton). Many more.

I don't recognize the name "Room" but "Pre Flight" sounds very familiar. I just checked it out on Youtube. Thanks for turning me on to something new.

Hi, The Booman ! I like your user name; it sounds as if you are full of surprises, but friendly too. I hope that's the case.

It's good to have someone new with an interest in blues/prog etc. I see Frownland, OH and Neapolitan have introduced themselves, and you will soon meet our other resident experts, Psy-Fi, rostasi, etc. And me? I'm the guy who posts, "ooh thanks" when they show me something new.

Welcome!

Most of those bands I really don't know much about except for their names. I haven't gone through any of their albums but with the exception of Procol Harum & their first two albums. I don't bother with The Who -- thanks to Jerry Bruckheimer.

My taste varies. If I had to pare down the list it would be: Les Paul & Mary Ford, The Rolling Stones, Steve Howe (the various bands he was in.) Traffic, Genesis, & Pram. I also like a bunch of one albums bands like Room and two albums bands like Trees.

In case you don't know who Pram are they're a superior version of The Residents. J/K!!! This forum the older bands trump newer ones, so that would be considered heresey here.

My favorite drummers are Mel Taylor, Jim Capaldi, Bill Burford, Charlie Watts, Carl Palmer and Bonzo. My favorite Jazz drummers are Elvin Jones & Joe Morello. There are three real Jazz aficionados on MB. Frownland is musicbanter's Grand Poobah of Jazz and he's probably right now scoffing at my Jazz knowledge or lack thereof. Mainly cause I failed to mention a European Free Jazz drummer.

You're welcome.
The Byrds have a comp. called "Preflyte." maybe that's what you're thinking of?

You are the first person I have come across to mention Jim Capaldi. Mercilessly underrated. Speaking of Joe Morello, I wonder where Bonzo got the idea for his drum solo.

The lines between psychedelic, freak, avant, and contemporary folk are a ****ing mess.

No, no I don't. I really don't use that term, and really never bother to search "freak folk" to find out what it is all about. I don't know who's who in that category. I've read where Vashti Bunyan is "the Godmother of Freak Folk." But I don't know what bands she spawned spawned bands that are considered Freak Folk.

There are genre terms I use and don't use. I only use the terms I am comfortable with i.e. Acid Folk and Psychedelic Folk. I recognize the term "Anti-Folk" exist but don't use it conversation. You'll never catch me saying 'Wow you have to check out that Anti-Folk artist Regina Spektor' to anyone ever.

There is evil Hipster Folk like The Lumineers. I hate their song Ho Hey with a passion. I don't know if evil Hipster Folk and Freak Folk are synonymous, so I stay away from using the latter.

In short: I use Psychedelic Folk for popular artists like Donovan that are folky and psychedelic. Acid Rock for obscure bands like Mellow Candle and Trees. Folk Rock for 70s bands like America. British Folk Rock for bands like Steeleye Span. Trees are a perfect example of Acid Folk cause they were influenced "Acid" Rock bands from San Franscico and one members was a Folkologist. They are very apt at blending Acid Rock with Folk music together.

Illuminations by Buffy Sainte-Marie

Lisnaholic 04-03-2020 07:47 AM

Yeah, ditto on those confusing sub-genre categories. I only use them if I have to, and in full knowledge of the fact that I'm probably getting them wrong.

It's occasionally annoying because it's an area of music I like: I remember me and Neapolitan exploring a whole bunch of Prog Folk artists together, which of course blurs pretty quickly into Psychedelic Folk. Then grindy and I looked at artists like Alek K Redfearn and Lars Hollmer, who have a kind of world folk jazz hybrid sound.

And as for Freak Folk, that became a discernably different genre to me, but only after checking out the music that dankrista put together on this compilatation:-

Spoiler for dankrsta's definitive Freak Folk post:

I made this mix few days ago for 8tracks, but inspired by Big Four Bands Thread decided to post it here too. Like I said there, I see freak folk genre as a modern scene influenced by 60s psychedelic jams, especially by more out there freak-outs (Red Krayola, Cromagnon, for example); Sun City Girls/Sir Richard Bishop brand of primitivism; and minimalism/drone of La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, Terry Riley etc...

I didn't make this playlist to be a beginner's guide, but it can serve as one. The mix is more oriented toward mystical, pagan side of freak folk (like being alone in the dark wood). It's interesting to compare it to neo-folk, which is, with its ties to early industrial, drenched in occult; this on the other side is swimming in 'primitive' ritual.
