I say hi, you say low

Hi there, I'm new to this forum. To forums in general in fact, so I have no clue how this all works, but I'll probably survive. I'm a 23 year old physics student. My music taste ranges mainly from classic 60s music to punk-related things; my favourite bands are the Beatles, Sleater-Kinney and the Kinks. And I love Bach. Other interests include books, drawing, Jodie Foster, physics, complaining about physics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and interviews with Aubrey Plaza.

Welcome!

I've been meaning to check out Sleather-Kinney but never really got far.
What's the best Jodie Foster movie? My personal vote goes to Carnage.
Also: Gravity is a buzz kill so I can relate to complaining about physics.

Last but not least: The dogs bark worse than they bite and the forum is friendlier than it seems ;)

grindy 10-26-2018 12:39 PM

Welcome to MB!
I'm pretty interested in physics. What field do you specialize in?
The MB forums can be a bit rude and crude at times but the people here are mostly cool and pretty chill behind the mask of nihilistic ****ery and really knowledgeable and passionate about music.

Oh and I love Amsterdam! Fantastic city!

MicShazam 10-26-2018 12:41 PM

I've never been to Amsterdam :(

grindy 10-26-2018 12:44 PM

Dude.
I didn't even smoke anything when I was there the last time.
We just walked and biked around, chilled in the park, ate some great kangaroo steak, went to a club...
It's beautiful there.

MicShazam 10-26-2018 12:54 PM

I think I'd like it. I mean, this is clearly nice:

https://www.carnets-voyage-photos.fr...msterdam-1.jpg

I wanna go there in the fall/winter some day. I like cities in fall and winter time, for some reason.

Maybe it's just that lights in the dark are a pretty thing.

MicShazam 10-26-2018 12:56 PM

So what are the other 1000 albums?

Marie Monday 10-26-2018 01:16 PM

You sound like a well-behaved tourist, for Amsterdam standards

Ok I think I figured out how to reply to specific messages so that's a start. You should definitely visit Amsterdam in the winter, it's at its most pretty when its dark.

The best Jodie Foster performance is in the Accused, I guess, but my favourite Jodie Foster movie is the Hotel New Hampshire just because it introduced me to her. And it's strange af.

Thanks for the welcome! (to all of you of course) Right now I'm writing a thesis on topological string theory. I'm still figuring out what it's all about but it's really interesting

Sounds cool.
String theory is fascinating but it's hard to get into it without getting really deep into the math.
A bit of math is okay (I'm an engineer and can take some) but at some point, and pretty quick, I'm lost.

I get that. Especially since subjects like string theory (or pretty much all physics since quantum mechanics) are really only understood on a mathematical level, so apart from that there is not much to get into. As soon as you ask what it actually means nobody knows...

grindy 10-26-2018 01:42 PM

I bet it still becomes quite intuitive at some point. I think Leonard Susskind had quite a nice talk about how ingrained such mathematical thinking can become with practice.

True, that takes some time though. With string theory I'm not there yet. I'll check out that talk by Susskind, thanks!

grindy 10-26-2018 02:31 PM

Now that I think about it, it might have been just a small part of some lecture or interview, so it might be hard to find.

"life is overrated" - the Kinks
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, however, is not.

Survival as a member is not guaranteed here. But you seem cool. Good luck. And welcome. Hope you do stick around. Just don't go into any of the political threads unless you enjoy bashing your head into a brick wall over and over again.

Best parts of Amsterdam for me were the banana pancakes and the women. Top 3 most beautiful women in the world. The men are great looking too! Must be all the Heineken.

I like those bands and J.S. Bach too. One of my favorite Shoegazing bands is Space Siren. They're from Holland. Have you heard of them?

Nah it's in spite of all the Heineken. Vile stuff. I think it's all the cycling around

Great, I've never heard of them! I like shoegaze, but haven't explored much of it yet. I like how you can hear their Dutch accent even through all the shoegaze racket

grindy 10-27-2018 03:50 AM

The political threads are fine actually, as long as one doesn't take oneself and political ideologies too seriously.

adidasss 10-27-2018 06:42 AM

Did grindy clean up the thread because he doesn't want to put off his nerdy string theory buddy? Awww...https://www.gay.hr/up/smilies/medo.gif

She/he'll figure it out eventually, buddy, ain't no escaping the squalor of musicbanter...https://www.gay.hr/up/smilies/nope.gif

That's my favorite Salinger story! https://www.gay.hr/up/smilies/love.gif

Haven't read it in ages. Should do that soon...

I can respect that. The Mayor was pretty much the best villain of the show.

I feel kinda bad that we both put 1 at the bottom. Even if all of the following seasons did outshine it, I still wanna pat it on the head for being so adorable and fun. I remember watching it for the first time on bootleg VHS tapes borrowed from my sister's friend. Unbeatable nostalgia.
