Hey

Hey, I've been around and about multiple music forums for a good while, so I thought I'd check this place out.

Most of my musical tastes are within the metal realm, but I like at least a little bit of everything. Thrash metal is probably my favorite genre. I have many favorite bands, but to not overwhelm anyone a top ten should do fine:

Helstar, Soundgarden, Clutch, Anthrax, Pantera, Rush, Judas Priest, Gentle Giant, Overkill, Obituary

Hope to have fun discussing some great music!

Never thought I'd see Helstar as anyone's top band but I ain't hatin'. This is still a song burned into my brain from listening to it countless times on one of my thrash mixed CDs back in high school.

Gentle Giant is real music. Everything else is just "fashion".

Always happy to see another Helstar fan, and that song you posted was my favorite from Nosferatu for the longest time. It might still be, but there's some days where I think Harsh Reality is my favorite. Burning Star is my favorite album of theirs, though I love every single one of their albums (You could easily call me a fanboy  )

They're one-of-a-kind, that's for sure. They had such an excellent run of albums from the debut through Interview (Minus Three Friends, never been a big fan of that album).

I wouldn't call myself a Helstar fan per se. I love cheesy thrash and speed metal that stays close to the early 80s spirit of nerdy goofballs with studded armbands making metal for the sake of metal and not mosh pits, but I never listened to all that much Helstar. I was just downloading a song or two from a ****load of bands on Kazaa before the days of full album downloading when I still had dial-up. There were one or two other Helstar songs I downloaded around the same time and that one just happened to be the one I put on my mix CD. I've listened to them more since then but never in any depth.

Now thinking of early 80s goofball speed metal and what say you on Exciter?

Yeah, Clutch ain't 'just "fashion"', m'friend. In fact, their entire persona is the exact polar opposite.

Welcome to the Bants, Unitron.

^Thanks, and excellent Clutch choice! Though as far as Robot Hive/Exodus goes, my first pick would be The Incomparable Mr. Flannery. Such an addicting song.

Exciter's great, I especially love their debut. Heavy Metal Maniac is such a fun anthem, and Iron Dogs is a beast of a track.

I heard that the original lineup is back, so I'm hoping for a new album that sits right at home with their classics.

The Batlord 09-04-2018 12:43 PM

I could never expect any band, reunited or otherwise, to capture that feel of Heavy Metal Maniac. That time is just done and I don't see Exciter being able to evolve beyond what they already were for the modern era. The only band I've heard come close was Wolf. The Black Flame does a standout job of sounding like an early 80s metal album without quite hitting the mark. Love it though.

As far as cheesy speed metal goes, Anvil is on the top for me. Even going into the 2000's they kicked ass.

The Batlord 09-04-2018 01:29 PM

Can't stand Anvil simply for the vocals and I doubt I'll ever get used to them. Sucks because I always need another 80s metal band in my life.
