We have a diverse music scene, but hardly reaches international audiences cuz most of genres are exclusive from each region. I'd spend a day talking about each region and its genre(s), but nah :P
About my favorite Brazilian acts, I'll name a few: Nara Leão (Bossa nova Queen, along with Elis Regina) Tom Jobim (Bossa nova King) Gilberto Gil (My fave from MPB) Zé Ramalho (Acoustic singer which incorporates north-eastern song style) Rita Lee (Former member of "Os Mutantes". Some people report her as "Brazilian rock queen") Scalene (Recent indie rock band) Baleia (Alternative music at its best) Maria Rita (Elis Regina's daughter, she's between MPB and jazz) Cássia Eller (A female 90's rock icon. RIP) Ana Carolina (One of the biggest names of MPB in early 2000's) Legião Urbana (80's indie rock ftw. They're famous here even today, even splitting up after vocalist's death) Cazuza (Another case of 80's indie/alternative rock. Most of his songs talk about corruption and criticizes the dictatorship regime that happened in here at that time. Also RIP) Gretchen (This one is most for being a charismatic joke act :P But I like how she embraced the Latin culture into her music) Phew, that's a lot D: |
