Anyways I'm super excited for RE Village, will be buying day 1. The RE franchise is made even more fun for me because my wife loves watching me play them, they're like a really good interactive horror movie nowadays

Very true - I should've phrased it differently.

What I meant is that I'm more of a fan of the older fixed-camera, tank controls games (SH2 is probably my all time favorite horror game). That always addded an element of tension for me that was lost in the transition to RE4's over the shoulder view. It's a great game, but a different kind of horror for sure. Much less focus on puzzles, inventory management and resource management. Some of that is definitely for the better. I never liked having to decide which consumable to use to pickup a key item in the old games rather than do a bunch of backtracking to get to a storage box. That said, Resi 4 is much more of a "blast your way to the end" kind of game, ala old Doom. For better or for worse, RE4 definitely spawned a lot of copycats.

My first Resident Evil game was 4 so the nostalgia of the tank control games is totally lost on me. I tried playing the Resident Evil 1 Remake and while there was a lot about it that I really appreciated like the truly exceptional spooky atmosphere, I found the controls just absolutely unbearable so I never got particularly far in it.

I do still think Resident Evil 4 has a lot of inventory/resource management, but that might just be because I'm awful at shooters and will waste a lot of ammo during fights either by missing completely or hitting enemies in the stomach or something which does basically no damage lol. Resident Evil 7 had a great mix of the modern style with more traditional survival horror gameplay, you really can't just Rambo through that game unless you're a god at shooters I guess.

I think the newer ports have an option to use a more directional movement rather than the tank controls. Worth trying if tank controls aint your thing.

I appreciate RE7 because the series really did need a new direction, like it did when RE4 was released. That said, I'm somewhat disheartened that the industry standard nowadaws is for all horror games to be in first person. Seems like ever since Amnesia came out that's the direction things have been going. And then of course when PT came out, it inspired a myriad of copycats, mostly for the worse (Visage being the exception). So now we have all kinds of walking simulators where spooky stuff happens the more you walk - and sometimes things change when you turn around (Layers Of Fear, Infliction, etc.).

Amnesia and Outlast are perhaps a worse influence overall - the formula of not having weapons and needing to run and hide from enemies when spotted - all baked together with half-ass stealth mechanics - is getting stale.

Check out the RE2 and RE3 remakes if you haven't. Personally the RE2 Remake is my favorite in the franchise at this point, such a wonderful game. Great pacing, memorable moments and atmosphere, enjoyable to see the 2 different paths, it's just great. But I never played the original so you might have a way different opinion

I have played the RE2 remake but not the remake of 3. I liked it well enough - I mean, by all technical definitions it's a great game. I completed it once though and never returned to it. At the time, I had more fun with DMC5 anyway.

I grew up with REmake though and I always envisioned what RE2 would look like in that style. So I finally got the RE2 remake I wanted, but not in the way I thought it would be as a kid.

Personally, I think Resi 0 is the most underrated one. Never gets any love.
