Wiki seems to play down what I remember as the (first-wave) skinheads' characteristic trait: their perpetual, simmering aggression. They weren't just anti-conservative, they were anti-liberal and anti-intellectual too. They saw real or imagined insults at ever turn and were both laughed at and feared for their taunt, "You screwin' my bird?" in which "screwing"= staring at . This accusation refered to a real or imagined slight and could well lead to an unprovoked attack on some hapless bystander who had made the mistake of glancing in their direction.

About the only thing to their credit was that their violence was usually confined to young men of similar age to themselves - to their discredit, they often went around in groups, the better to outnumber their victims. ( Typical victims being hippies, nerds or racial minorities.)

Skinhead is definitely generally an insult over here. Not because of the nazi stuff, but because nobody likes their baldness being pointed out.
