Also, by a certain age I'd expect an intelligent person to be taking care of them self too.

When you have a child/children you can't afford, lower class income with which you somehow manage to scrape by, and still don't bother with birth control, then you are either a moron or a Catholic. The amount of people I know/have known who are guilty of this is proof enough for me that self-sufficiency alone does not make one intelligent.

Also, I don't think it takes all that much intelligence to pay bills: make cash > pay cash > continue to live in domicile. Boom.

Plenty of debilitating psychological reasons why an otherwise intelligent individual might fail at life.

Well failing at life really depends on what your goals are, and I never believe a person fails until they give up trying.

Then its not a failure. They tried, and that's a success in my book.
