I don't like to grow it out anymore because I've realized that I look like a goof with long hair (unless it was cut absolutely perfect, but that's a tedious task). Short hair suits me more.

there are a couple of tricks to growing out your hair.

easiest one - wear a cap. although most schools and jobs frown upon that, and those who don't would require a hair net.

otherwise you pretty much need to shoot for a dave navarro / mushroom cut as a transitional hairstyle. which dramatically increases the chances of people thinking you're about 12 years old.
