From region to region it really is kind of a cultural shock. Different dialects, political beliefs, religious beliefs, economies, education systems, food and other factors.

midnight rain 04-18-2009 11:42 AM

Yeah, it may not be as radical as going from the U.S. to another country, but it is different from region to region. Some people seem to think we Americans are all arrogant, fat, stupid, nosy racists (basically every stereotype in the book that foreign countries label us as being), and while there are plenty of those that we aren't so proud of, not all of us are one of them :yeah:

Yes but this can happen for every country can't it to be fair? The English stereotype is hardly indicative of who we are at all. Being on forums such as this the only major difference I generally see is the differences in humour and of course calling Football:soccer :D

I think it's the media that put's up images of cultures and nationalities but in the end we all have the same dreams, aspirations and struggles it seems.

Absolutely it happens everywhere, I was just responding to this conversation specifically which was regarding the United States. Plus the U.S. is the only country I can speak for being as it is the only country I've lived in.

By the way, it's called soccer! Just look at the smilie: :soccer:

:D

if by this you mean more subtle humor, then shit yeah. There are things in movies that I find hilarious that no one else i kow think are funny what-so-ever. eg, rock-n-rolla when the main character is being chased down the road...well pretty much all of guy ritchie, the real version of The Office as opposed to our retarded version. Im not sure if this is what you meant at all, just something Ive noticed and love. please correct me with harsh words if I am completely off track

No you are too late to the Football V Soccer argument lol it was coined in the 1800's long before Soccer was mentioned!

Actually, I don't think very many countries had institutionalized slavery for several centuries followed by another century of state sanctioned segregation based on racism...;)

Worst argument ever. If I ever have any sort of high authoritic power, I will change our football name to awesomeball to dismiss any future confusion.

/facepalm.

Most of the european countries have far more savage histories to them. Don't think you're high and mighty because you were too poor to do anything nasty.

No I won't correct you at all and I am not saying one humour is better than the other but certain things are lost in translation on both sides. It's not a complaint just an observation. I know that things like 'mother' jokes are used in the U.S whereas ours are 'Mother In Law' jokes! Our humour can be subtle but also sarcastic which can seem to be nasty to some maybe.

TheBig3 04-18-2009 12:10 PM

its nasty to people who attend pancake breakfasts after sunday services.

The sodomites in San fran love british humor.

America stays on top by not being able to be classified.

We eternally buck-passed our way to the top. German build cars, the french cook, we build social modles. It is what it is.

simplephysics 04-18-2009 12:12 PM

Tsk. Back on topic for a split second.

Eh, I don't see anything wrong with the Americanized version of The Office. It seems some people think they're 'with it' if they watch the original version and that it will never be bettered by the American version no matter what! I hear this argument all the time, but I honestly think they're two different shows.

Plus, we have House, which has as much wit and sarcasm as any British show!

Well, Im a huge fan of it, but only really have movies to judge it on. I think it goes both ways for both places because america puts out a TON of bull**** movies (like the 35 american pie flicks) that arent humorous what-so-ever, but we have a few good ones (me and you and everyone we know). As for british humour (rock-n-rolla, snatch) are excellent, but movies with simon pegg (hot fuzz, shaun of the dead) are junk IMO.

I dont watch tv, a buddy I had rented the full seasons of both and we didnt even bother with the american after the first episode after realizing it was the exact same. I have never heard anyone discuss this topic, and for anyone who points out reasons that peoples opinions on subjects are for the purpose to be 'with it' then they are more than likely overly insecure if they even do it on the internet. That guy from our version (40 yr old version, evan almighty) is the most overrated comical actor I have ever seen. The only thing I have seen him do that was humorous was in Bruce Almighty.

jackhammer 04-18-2009 12:22 PM

I'm guilty too but back on topic please people.

Wow, talk about a classic example of judging something too fast. The first episode is the only episode that follows the same storyline and script of it's British counterpart. And what exactly is it that I'm insecure about? I'm not telling myself to like it, I actually do. And most of Steve Carell's funniest moments are on The Office, so I wouldn't recommend judging him on the big screen.

Hmm I wouldn't say there's that much racial tension in the U.S. as evidenced by President Barack Obama. Racism happens everywhere, I think we Americans get hit upon harder for what we did because we've apologized for it and tried to make amends while other countries try and forget what they've committed. But again, that's just what I thought and I see that wasn't exactly the point you were making in your post, I just felt like going on a mini-rant of my own. :D

Thank you darling, and yes I'm absolutely sure you're right, I don't actually think now that I was trying to say racism, there's just a huge variety of multicultural people in your country.

Haha fair enough, I love her for her fashion style, she designs all of her own outfits and makes herself look good even though she may not be conventially pretty. :)
