Damn, dude. That looks like an awesome kit. What's the scene like up in Canada? What kind of music do you play?

the scene here is eclectic, i'd say. i know from a little bit of experience and what my friends tell me that toronto and montreal are the sort of hubs and bases for the majority of anything that has commercial potential, and thusly house a disproportionately large percentage of the live music happening here. musicians flock there (i should be there, but am slower than most kids). stratford, where i am from, is sadly where justin bieber came from. it could be good, but i fear that it will overshadow the fact that some really extraordinary musicians have come from this place. ones that i've known over the years are john ferguson, colin fisher, graham van pelt, i've met jay hammer although never really "known him," and a guy named ben payne who hails from toronto cites stratford as one of his favourite places to play and has been coming here for many years (10-15 by my count) blowing peoples' socks of with fusion band ED TOAST before forming Dr. Payne & the Disease. i think the latter has actually broken up and don't know what he's up to right now... other than the reunion ED TOAST is having IN STRATFORD on MAY 29th at MOLLY BLOOMS. (yeah... that was totally a plug for something that excites me to a degree that you can probably imagine but not properly relate to at this point)... and my pops has a big huge voice that all the old cats know about around here. he'd blow your socks off. ... anyway, yeah. if the rest of canada is full of as many creative people as i see roll through this town of roughly 32000, then i'd say our music scene has absolutely got to be one of the best in the world. the music i play is kind of a long story that can be summed up by saying that i just believe that i can effectively make music with anything that you put in front of me, because i don't really think wholeheartedly that i am in charge of what music is made of. this attitude has developed over the past 3(ish) years of not being in a band and not playing with anyone. the gigging i've done in that time is going to a bar on a jam night and doing originals after kicking everybody off the stage at 2am (i play alone with my originals because jamming is improv, but my music is too unconventional to play with people who have never heard it, and they won't let me kick the band off the stage at the height of the night, which is understandable). i plan on doing a lot of busking this summer, as it is actually more profitable than having a job in some cases, and is fun as hell. my last band though, in which i played those drums, was probably classifiable as instrumental prog or something close to but not quite prog. we just looked at is as edgy art made of sound. it's possible that quantity over quality just happened verbally, but that's my best answer. i have some music on the internet that i can give URLs for to you if you'd like. just ask. i send. (i don't wanna post them here, cuz i can't remember if i'm allowed. ok. that's enough. bye. |
