Hello people
Hi, I thought about joining the crew... I've been a music fan and listener since my mother used to play classical music (mostly Beethoven) and rock and roll (mostly Queen and The Rolling Stones) out loud. One day I got my first MP3 player and I started appreciating and contemplating music b sides simply listening to it. When I started listening to music I didn't know a lot about artists and genres but I started to search and read until my music culture rooted itself. I'm not very good at introductions so I'll just make two lists - One about my personal self and another about my musical preferences.
Personal self: - I am male, white and 21 years old - I am a law student and I live with my parents (I help paying the bills) - I'm politically a liberal and I neither align with the left nor with the right. I'm mostly a centrist and independent, but sympathize with Social-Democracy. I'm also an atheist. - B sides music I like videogames, literature, movies/TV series, anime (and some manga), philosophy, economics and science in general - I am Portuguese (situated in southern Europe) and I live in Portugal. I am reasonably fluent in English. Musical preferences: - I am a huge fan of rock and roll, and that includes genres like Heavy Metal, Alternative, Hard Rock, Pop Rock, lots of Classical Rock, quite some modern bands, etc. I've been listening to rock since I was 14 and picked up a Led Zeppelin album from my now deceased dad (I now call my stepdad "dad") - I also enjoy other genres like pop/popular music, from Sinatra to Michael Jackson, and even some modern artists are decent (not really what I consider art but some mainstream pop songs are catchy) - I like hip hop as well, specially Hip Hop from the 90's - I like a big variety of Portuguese music, mostly rock/Portuguese rock bands (some of them are similar to American/British bands of the same eras but with Portuguese lyrics). We also have the music genre Fado. - Lately I've been listening to classical music and getting into it. I'm starting by Beethoven since it's the first composer I remember listening to when I was a kid. - I dislike elitism in music. I classify elitism as the belief that one's music taste is superior and better than others. - I'm not a musician or an expert in musical instruments, I'm simply the average person who enjoys music I hope I have a good time here |

I'm also an atheist that likes videogames, literature, movies/tv series, philosophy, science, music and dislikes elitism. You seem nice.
You mention a lot of musical genres, but are there any other specific artists/bands you feel like mentioning? I like the ones that you did mention, especially Sinatra. Welcome to MB. |

Hello @Overcast. I didn't mention many artists because the list is long, but since you asked I might as well give a decent sample:
Rock (including all sub-genres and Heavy Metal) - AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Alice In Chains (I love this band), Alter Bridge, The Beatles, Bee Gees, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, Dead Kennedys, Deep Purple, David Bowie, The Doors (love this one as well), Dire Straits (and this one), Eagles, Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters (my favourite modern band), Guns N' Roses, Iggy Pop, Iron Maiden (my favourite metal band), Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Judas Priest, Kings Of Leon, KISS, Kyuss, Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skinard, Megadeth, Metallica, The Misfits, Motley Crue, Motorhead, Muse, Nirvana, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Queen, Queens Of The Stone Age (another gold modern band), Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ramones, The Rolling Stones, Scorpions, Sex Pistols, Slayer, Slipknot, Soundgarden, System Of A Down, U2, Van Halen, Velvet Underground, The Who, Yes, 30 Seconds To Mars Guitarists in particular - Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Zakk wylde and John Frusciante Drummers - David Grohl and John Bonham Bass players - Whoever plays for Muse Singers - I don't have a favourite, but I love the voice of Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. I care more about instrumentals than lyrics and singing. Pop music - Abba, Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams (pop-rock), Tina Turner, Adele Hip Hop - Tupac, NWA, Gang Starr, Easy-E, Eminem (not all albums), Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Immortal Technique, Dr Dre, some Snoop Dogg Reggae - I've only listened to Bob Marley but I enjoyed it a lot. It's one of the genres I want to explore Electronic - I like listening to it when I'm at nightclubs but other than that it's not my thing. It's not bad though and I have nothing against it. DJ Tiesto is pretty cool Classical - Not adding anything because I'm still exploring the genre. - This was done using my itunes list so it's in alphabetical order and it's certainly far from complete. |

Real solid list, recognize and enjoy near everything there. You should be able to find a bunch of stuff you'll like here if you explore a bit. I definitely suggest to keep pursuing an interest in classical and to keep an open mind towards all genres of music. There's great stuff to be found.

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep pursuing my interests while handling my life affairs and tasks. The list I wrote just above is incomplete and I don't love all those artists, it's more or less random (except the ones that I specifically mention to love like The Doors)

There's lot of Portuguese music so it's hard to tell. There's a lot of traditional music, the most popular genre being Fado (Amália Rodrigues is our most well known Fado singer), and lots of regional folk music (Madredeus are good artists). There's popular music that includes pop and rock, I personally listen to a lot of rock and alternative rock bands, my favourites are GNR (not the American band), Xutos & Pontapés, Ornatos Violeta (this one is basically the Portuguese Nirvana), Clã and The Gift. I also like our Hip Hop a lot (I prefer it to Hip Hop from English speaking countries) and my favourite band is Dealema (a Hip Hop band composed by 4 MC's) |

Rural areas have beautiful landscapes and very unique places to visit but urban cities are better for foreigners. If you happen to have any question regarding our habits or culture (example - How to greet, how to act with people, etc.) just ask me.

We call our hip hop "Hip Hop Tuga", "Tuga" derives from the word "portuga" and is a code word for "portuguese". |
