I would never make a comment like "all 50s music is terrible" because I have not the ground to stand on; I dont listen to that sort of music, so really I'm in no position to challenge or put it down. Neither are you. That's the way I see it, anyway. It seems, forgive me, almost terminally close-minded of you to discount over twenty years of music without even knowing much about it, or trying to understand it. How can for instance, screamo be the same as progressive rock, or dubstep be related in any way to ambient? If you don't know what I'm talking about, you should realise that you're therefore not really in a position to judge. I would urge you to listen to some post-90s music, then make your decision. And I dont mean the charts. There are plenty of people here who can point you in any direction you wish to explore.

Oh, one other thing, which has not been addressed but formed part of your aversion to music after the 90s: downloading music. Well, sure, lots of people prefer CDs or even LPs, but don't forget that downloading music is a great way to "try before you buy", to see if you like the music you're planning to buy before you do. In a battered economy like ours, I couldn't possibly afford to buy all the albums I THINK I might like. I used to do that when I was younger, and working, but circumstances have changed dramatically for me now, and downloading music is the best option for me. I have a huge vinyl collection, but my turntable got busted and I've never really bothered to replace it.
Sure, today's music is almost instant and always accessible via ipods, YouTube, itunes and so on, but that's how the world is today, and in fairness, some artistes have gained fame through those media in a way they could never have done had they just been trying to sell CDs. So music downloads, while a pain to a purist like yourself, certainly fulfil a need and perform a valuable service in our world today. Anyway, I guess they're not going anywhere, so may as well get used to them!

Well I just want to say before I contact a member of admin about deleting my account, no hard feelings, I didn't mean to offend anybody.
"Out", as the Americans say.

Exactly. This is a music forum. Not a metal forum, not a jazz forum, not a 60s forum but a music forum. Naturally it is going to attract a certain type of person - people who love music and love to absorb and explore all it has to offer. Close-minded views and generalisations regarding the very thing that everyone here should feel passionate about are likely to be met by some strong opinions. The majority of people here can debate and share differing opinions. Personally theres only so much that I myself can handle when it comes to opinions on certain bands, certain albums, certain tracks etc because frankly if I have fully formed my own opinion of something then chances are I wont give a crap what anyone elses opinion is. It's not rudeness, I just have nothing to gain from using this forum for that kind of thing. Generalisations and a closed mind are, however, different. For example someone can tell me that they don't like Black Sabbath and, although I may be tempted to question their sense of hearing and mental health, that's fine. Opinions differ and everyones got one. Tell me that all heavy metal is crap, or all the singing is the same, or every band make emotionless, thousand note a second, wank-a-thon albums designed to cover up a lack of real talent or song writing abilities and I won't question your opinion, I'll ignore or disregard it. I'll ignore or disregard it because if you can make such a ridiculous generalisation then it's blatantly obvious that it is uninformed and you simply know nothing of what you talk about. Basically, if you stick to what it is you know about and keep an open mind about what it is you don't know about then everyone here will be cool. If you don't then you might mistake the response you get for offence when really you are just interacting with mostly open-minded people with a passion and strong opinions. |

The amount of 'your taste isn't good enough listen to this' heroes we have here annoys me just as much. Nothing wrong with waiting for that person to ask rather than forcing it on them.
