So that's why.

It's gone.

No longer an issue. I'm being good.

I listen to a pretty broad range of music. Rock especially. I'm old enough to remember big 60's bands like the Beatles and the Stones, both of whom I liked (but probably the Stones moreso), to say nothing of the Who. And beginning more in the '50's Chuck Berry, and the rockabilly cats like Carl Perkins, Elvis, Gene Vincent, Wanda Jackson, etc. And early rock people like Little Richard, and of course Bo Diddley, for whom I had the honor of playing bass once, a few years before he passed. Back to the '60's, I also liked the American garage bands like Troggs, Raiders, Kingsmen, and surf/instrumental music like Link Wray the Ventures, and Dick Dale (whom I just saw play live a few weeks ago). And a huge fan of CCR.

In the 70's, there were all kinds of bands I liked, especially things that were guitar-centric, but conversely NOT the dreaded disco. So, early proto punk/glam like NY Dolls, Dictators, MC5, Iggy Pop/Stooges, Bowie and especially the NY/London punk axis that came after: Ramones, Heartbreakers, Blondie, Talking Heads, Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks, 999, Damned, etc.

But I also liked non-punk 70's guitar rock, hometown boy Tom Petty, roots/country people like the Byrds, and all kinds of power pop/new wave, from Cheap Trick (whom I've had the pleasure of hanging out with one time when I interviewed Bun E., my band's drummer is his former drum tech) and the Cars to people no one's ever heard of like Moon Martin (who wrote "Bad Case of Lovin' You"), or the Jags or the Records.

Jeez, I still got the 80's 90's and 00's to go.

That's enough for now.

Well, with that, I think you'll fit in just fine. :)

So, with that sort of background, what do you think of the current rock scene?

I honestly don't know if I have an opinion. Despite how great Gainesville is as a small town with a live music scene through the roof (the reason I never left, plus that I was a bit of a cradle-robber-- I had graduated law school but the future Mrs. Krashpad was still in undergrad), it's not like there's a lot of radio to listen to, Believe it or not, though UF is a huge university, it doesn't have a "college radio" station as might keep me in touch with the "current rock scene." There are 2 stations that pretty much have the same post-grunge/post-Metallica type of "modern rock" format (100.5 FM the Buzz and the former FM channel canned by UF, now web-only, Rock104.com),and if that's the "current rock scene" to which you refer, then I couldn't be more bored with it, though to be honest I rarely listen to those stations, with the exception of their Sunday night "locals" shows (where my band gets airplay, haha). Downtuned guitars, people actually intentionally singing like Eddie Vedder (I should be clear I don't blame Vedder, though I'm no PJ fan, he uses what he's got, as opposed to all these singers clearly copying him), angsty blech.

As far as the indie scene I honestly don't really know what's going on with it. The other two local outlets, that I do listen to (one a low-power broadcast FM station, the other an internet-only one) are super iconoclastic and I have no idea how much any given show really reflects what the current rock scene might be.

So, mention a particular band and if I have an opinion I'll give it, haha, but there's a good chance that I've never heard of a given band, or maybe just heard of them without actually hearing them. I did think that that first Killers album of a few years ago was absolutely brilliant. Fwiw.

Well that sucks about your radio and all. Louisville is lucky enough to have an indie station to keep me busy when I feel like listening to the radio (though they've recently been playing mostly 80's indie... blech.). And our personal rock scene is dominated by hardcore, sludge metal, and post punk stuff, so I'm quite happy with the local rock scene.

If you want a fantastic new rock band, check out Mr. Gnome. They are freaking amazing. Like a psychedelic sledge hammer.

I'll look for them but I've never really been into psychedelic.

Listened to some Mr. Gnome, but it's a little slow/artsy/reverb-drenched for me.

Oh, and now I've got 15 posts, here's a pic so's to show my age, from my recent 25th Annual 29th Birthday (I'm 54):

I'm in my mid seventies. I've got you beat.

I don't even know how to use a computer. I've been trying to get it to make toast for an hour.
