Hullawrerr

Well since Ive started posting here, its only polite I introduce myself.

Im an old geezer with what used to be a very wide taste in music, though over maybe the last 15 years its narrowed somewhat. Sadly I find myself listening to the 'next big thing' only to think that they sound like <enter band name for x or y years ago>.

I was/am big into UK punk, what the UK press used to be called 'industrial', reggae, Indie, ethereal, shoegazing, heavenly voices from Hyperium (RIP), some glam, and probably a few others. While I have idolised many bands with a passion over the years, no-one has ever come close to Cocteau Twins and, while I try to keep a very open mind, I doubt anyone ever will.

I doubt you will find me in jazz, Heavy metal, country or rap topics as I just dont get those genres -never have - even went to a Deep Purple gig in the 70s to see what all the fuss was all about at the time they were the loudest band in the world apparently and fell asleep..... also gave away an Aerosmith ticket to a guy outside the gig (he seemed happy) cos no way was I going to watch them, free or not !!

Recent stuff Im into are The Big Pink, Zola Jesus, Fever Ray, Hockey, The Deer Tracks, Sol Seppy and probably a few others if I could be bothered to get of my fat arse & have a look.

Anyway - Hullo !!

You seem really nice, welcome :).

Welcome, and I can respect those musical tastes... though I have to say, you're seriously missing out by not liking metal or jazz! ;)

And I have to say, you may just not like the ye olde metal/protometal from back in your day. Ask around here, you may find some shoegaze related metal that you enjoy! ;)

If you're having difficulty in enjoying jazz, then I would suggest looking into a nu jazz band called Skalpel.

Anyways, welcome to the site. (The Cocteau Twins are great) :)

Thanks - Will have a look - anyone you suggest ?
My son got into some god-awful stuff like Pantera and Machine Head which has in a way cemented my view of the genre, plus some (well most) of the stuff on Guitar Hero has done the same.

gave it a listen and its OK, I didnt run for the hills.

I guess that I (possibly like a few others - and indeed this site) tend to put things in genre boxes/labels and have opinions accordingly, when many artists dont fit in the box, or indeed could straddle 2 or more boxes (bad metaphor, I know) and jazz is a very wide box

We got chucked out a pub in Ireland once that had some sort of Jazz MTV playing rather loudly on the tv screens - After a song finished, I said to my companion something "thank god that ***t has finished" - the barman heard us and told us to drink up & leave.

Apparently according to the know-it-alls that stalk amazon reviews, the last couple of David Sylvian albums are jazz-influenced and without doubt IMO they are the worst 2 things he has ever released - manafon is an absolute dog, what a waste of such a wonderful voice

Well everyone around here got into Alcest not that long ago. It's essentially shoegaze metal.

Personally, I'm not huge into it, but you may be. I enjoy traditional metal, which you obviously don't like.

I'm not very knowledgeable about metal that incorporates elements of the genres you mentioned... you may want to go to one of our several metal threads and take a look around. Jackhammer and Batlord are our two biggest metalheads (to my knowledge) and will give ya a hand if you care enough to ask! :)

Thanks for that - it was going well until about 1:45 when, what I assume some would call vocals kicked in..... yeeuch, how could they do that to a track with such potential ? - cos most of the rest of it was good

I guess on reflection of my likes & dislikes I must put a fair amount of emphasis on vocals - eg I really like the music of Talking Heads but not Byrnes vocals (similar with Led Zep just cant stand his vocals) and there are singers whose vocals I admire but not the stuff they sing (Plant sounding good now, but country ?? - GIRUY !!)..... maybe Im too fussy ?

Well in that case you might like Pelican, a band who play a similar style of metal, but entirely sans vocals. Some great melodic, dynamic stuff here imo:

And welcome aboard! You do seem nice. :)
