Greetings from Kentucky.

Howdy y'all. Mah name's Blarobbarg.

If you can't tell from my wonderfully quaint slang, I am from Kentucky. I am a big fan of classic rock, jazz, punk, and metal. And everything in between. I'm also stepping into the waters of underground hip hop, "steampunk" music, and the local Louisville hardcore scene. Betcha didn't know that Louisville is brimming with mosh pits, did ya?

Anyway, I'm also the drummer of a fledgeling poppy/possibly countryish/possibly folky jazz rock band. Yeah. I'm just calling it that for now. I really have no clue what it is.

So. I talk about music constantly in real life, and people get bored with it. So I've come here, to a place that I hope can accept my eccentric behavior.

Heh. Me too! Welcome aboard!

What are some of your favorite bands?

Blarobbarg 02-12-2011 10:59 PM

That's incredibly hard for me, because I will often change what I am listening to, depending on how I feel.

I guess if I want to go with what I will listen to often and dependently, I'd have to go with Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Casting Crowns (I know, I know, Christian rock and all that). Miles Davis, Herbie Han****, Louis Armstrong are usually my jazz favorites. ZZ Top and Carlos Santana are both childhood favorites and I listen to them quite a bit. I listen to a bunch of Gorillaz as well.

I've also really, really been getting into the Black Keys and The Clash lately. Been listening to "Brothers" and "London Calling" almost nonstop since I bought them.

Janszoon 02-12-2011 11:04 PM

Well out of that list I love Mile Davis, Herbie Hancock and the Clash. And Satchmo, ZZ Top and Gorillaz aren't too shabby either.

I figured, being from Louisville, you might be a David Pajo fan too. :)

Niceeee. Favourite song off of London Calling?

Blarobbarg 02-13-2011 06:55 AM

Honestly, no favorite. The whole thing is great.

Welcome to MB!

ThePhanastasio 02-13-2011 08:35 AM

Welcome! Decent list of bands you have going on there - I'm from Kentucky as well, which you could probably notice from the location bit beneath my avatar. :)

But yes; welcome!

Davis, Han****, Armstrong, and the Clash? I like your taste. I haven't heard much by the Black Keys, but I like their sound.

Welcome!

Hey hey hey! What part of ol' Kantuck are ye from?

Palatable Vera 02-13-2011 01:09 PM

I'm from Kentucky as well. :D

Janszoon 02-13-2011 01:39 PM

I am not from Kentucky. But I am a big fan of Jim Beam.

If I ever drink again, 'better believe it'll be a straight Jim Beam bourbon.

ThePhanastasio 02-13-2011 02:17 PM

Maker's Mark > Jim Beam.

Just sayin'.

I agree, but I'm not wealthy enough to drink Maker's Mark on a regular basis

You should recalculate. I don't know about prices where you are but I get Maker's Mark for only 2 - 3 dollars more per bottle than Jim Beam. Also consider that MM is 45% alcohol (90 proof) as opposed to JB's piddling 40%. Factor those in with the fact that Beam tastes like shit compared to MM and you may change your mind.

Hi Blarobbarg (how do you remember your own name?).
Your taste of music sounds good! You'll fit right in :)

Hmmm... I'll have to investigate this further, though I certainly don't think Jim Beam tastes like shit.

It doesn't taste bad .. Maker's Mark tastes so much better though.

Also, welcome Kentuckian. Louisville has been a hotbed of music for decades. Some of my favorite 90s bands came from there.

Hank The Drifter 02-13-2011 05:53 PM

Welcome, you have some awesome taste. When I saw Kentucky I was hoping for someone that might love country and bluegrass. Metal, jazz, and punk is good enough for me though! I'm from a state or so south of ya. Enjoy your stay this place can teach you a lot if you're looking to expand your taste.

Blarobbarg 02-13-2011 09:19 PM

In order...

@Janszoon: Believe it or not, not so much. Slint is pretty good (and of course, incredibly influential) but not really loving his solo stuff.

@morgos: I would definitely check out The Black Keys. So far I only have "Brothers" and one song off of a compilation, but I will soon be buying more. :)

@Conan: I'm from the good ol' city of Louevil.

@s_k: Well I got tired of "Blarg" as a screen name because half the time people were like, "SO DO U LIKE RED VS BLUE LOL." Still not entirely sure why, as I only have a vague idea what Red Vs. Blue is. But anyway.

@Hank The Drifter: Yeah, I'm definitely looking for some musical expansions. Always am. And I'm not a big bluegrass fan myself, but I tolerate and occasionally enjoy country. :)

What about Tortoise though?

Haha, wouldn't have been a problem for me as I haven't got a clue what 'Blarg' is, except for a sound some may make when they find something disgusting... Or when they vomit.
Eitherway, I wouldn't have a clue what red & blue would mean. I'd just go for purple and get it over with.

Haven't checked them out. Guess I will.

ThePhanastasio 02-14-2011 07:58 AM

You pronounce it Lou-uh-vull? A lot of people here in Ashland say it that way, but my college roommate was from there and told me it was supposed to be "Lou-ee-ville".

Blarobbarg 02-14-2011 03:14 PM

Loo-ee-ville? Really? Must be from east side. :p

But seriously, nobody I know calls it that. So I dunno.
