As far as hip-hop goes, not an expert by any means. But I liked the old-school, more "good-timey/party" type stuff. Not the more current "tough guy" junk.

Here's a stab at listing some of my favorite artists/bands ( off the top of my head, looking at my iTunes ) :

Big Star
Bill Hicks ( comedy )
Charles Mingus ( jazz )
Cheap Trick
The Clash
Damone
The Dragons
Edgar Varese ( classical/avant garde )
Helmet
Jason & The Scorchers
KISS
Kix
The Knack
Krzysztof Penderecki ( classical )
Marshall Crenshaw
Material Issue
The Mooney Suzuki
Motorhead
The Replacements
Scott Walker
Slade
The Smithereens
Supersuckers
Sweet
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant
Too Much Joy
TSAR
Ultimate Fakebook
Urge Overkill
The Wildhearts ( probably my all-time favorite band )

There's lots more, but that gives you some kinda idea.
The bolded ones are ones I know and like

Don't really like Motorhead or Kiss

I guess we have different taste than I thought

I've seen The Wildhearts a few times. Ginger's a local lad so i've seen him kickin around at the same gigs and stuff as well from time to time.

Props for Helmet and Motorhead among others.

I had to wait a dozen or so years to see the Wildhearts - I envy the UK folks easy access to the band.

Nice to see some of you guys like some of the stuff I do. Looking forward to some good conversations.

In my neck of the woods they play very frequently. They are a Newcastle based band so i have seen them there a few times and Ginger is often at gigs there. I saw them once not far away in Sunderland in a tiny venue where the amps were about a quarter of the size of the standing room (OK, thats a slight exaggeration but they were huge) and damn near made my ears bleed.
