hello everyone, i thought it pertinent to introduce myself

i'm a singer/songwriter from sydney, australia. i'm always looking for good music to inspire me. this seemed like a suitable place to go to. my favourite albums atm are kid a, for emma, forever ago, and david bowie's "low". my main influences are psychedelic, ambient, folk, post rock and progressive. i really like abstract lyrics and poetry; i hate straightforward lyrics.

i'm one of those "starving artists" in that i can never seem to find a steady job while regularly venturing for gigs, paid or not. most are the latter, for now. right now i'm in a bit of a slump since my pc with protools is screwed up, so i can't record.

i will probably mainly be using this site to post my lyrics and ask for advice.. don't have a lot of time on my hands.

anyway HELLO HERP DERP

Welcome.

What are your instruments of choice?

OceanAndSilence 09-09-2009 11:54 AM

at the moment i'm mainly a singer/guitarist. i use keys for figuring out musical theory. my sense of dynamics and taste is musically mature (from what my uni lecturers told me) but my ability in theory is lacking. i've been singing "my whole life", i've only played guitar for two or so years, but luckily i love it enough to have learned quickly.

my myspace/youtubes are the same urls as my username on this forum. don't worry, i'll be sticking around, i just didn't want to spam 15 posts.

Arya Stark 09-09-2009 12:00 PM

And your musical preferences?

OceanAndSilence 09-09-2009 12:11 PM

i kind of inferred that with my influences, didn't i?

These are just labels that you can apply to an X number of bands and artists. Do you have any favorites besides Bowie, Bon Iver and Radiohead?

I was referring to specific music preferences, other than the few you named. It's what we do here. Good luck fitting in, though.

Idiot.

Welcome, OceanAndSilence,
I listened to "Babel"--very heartfelt, and I liked the increase in energy and intensity as you picked up the song. I enjoy abstract lyrics, too, but actually right now am writing lyrics that are intentionally almost completely devoid of metaphors and symbolism--about as straightforward as I can make them :)! So it should be fun for me to listen/read your work for a change of pace!

I imagine it is lovely where you are (Australia). All I see around me is row after row after row after row after row after row after row of corn and soybeans (with an occasional livestock confinement to break up the monotony of agricultural monocultures).

Idiot.

oh my, you pressed enter a few times for effect!

as for my preferences, they're eclectic. i like many bands, and musicians, but i don't see the point of listing them. are my preferences a definition of me? sorry for not doing what you wanted, sugar. i don't think it's an issue of fitting in as much as it is an expression of individuality (and if that's what you meant by "fitting in", then i will fit in nicely). thank you for your kind words to a new member.

thanks. i wish i lived in that sort of area... i live in suburban sydney. i'm sure it's no smogfest like some parts of america, but it's getting there.

Does being so individual mean disregarding anyone who takes an interest in you?

You're new here, awwsugar wanted to show an interest in you and welcome you to the site & you basically threw it back in her face.

Keep on doing that & no you won't fit in here.
