Shit's been checked, you sir do indeed have quite the electic taste. It looks as though you don't dive too deep into any one genre looking at the artists you've listed, but even so it's a pleasure to have you on the forum.

you're right, i haven't delved deeply into any genre, i don't want to pigeon-hole my preferences before i even start. my main goal is to only create songs in a manner that encapsulates their context, which can be done by utilizing all song facets meticulously.

right now i want to focus on music that is ambient/experimental, maybe even electronica like aphex or autechre... taking away rhythmic percussive elements usually allows us to lose the sense of time, and listen. i like that feeling.

I agree with you very much about enjoying music for what it is and not using it as a social plateau. I think my last post about music on MB was about the "Inchworm" song and how it is one of my all-time favorites! There seem to be a lot of Tool groupies here, but none of those songs move me like the "Inchworm" song does :)

I think MB is a great place to learn about genres and their history and development. I suspect you'll find a lot of useful info here. I, for example, know pretty much nothing about musicians and music other than classical music, so I've enjoyed reading about death metal and rap on MB (there are stickies at the top of each section that provide descriptions of genres). Also, members' journals are a great place to learn about music you may not have heard before (although it sounds like you've heard a lot).

Sorry about the smog in Suburban Sydney. One positive about Iowa is that it is so cold in winter (-30 degrees F, excluding windchill) that we don't have a lot of people or cars or smog. Of course, all the runoff from the manure and fertilizer here is contributing to the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico, so "we" do our fair share of polluting the world.
