Default Good Morning from Australia.

Hi, I'm from Australia and I suppose I love my music.
I'll listen to neigh on anything from French pop (Alizee =D) to Swedish thrash-metal and everything in between, there's just two things that I just can't listen to and that's the new hip-hop/rap (old school stuff is fine, the key word is new) and country (it seems to be just bad pop music with a twang).

I've never been on a music forum before (usually it's video game forums all'round) so I don't know how the rules'd work (S'pose you can't sledge someone's taste in music, can you?). I'm hoping to experience a great variety of music here and expand my musical tastes more so... maybe someone can persuade me into listening to a country blues band. Hehe.

Thanks.

Welcome to Musicbanter, good to see another Aussie, what area do you hail from?

In regards to modern hip hop, what sort of stuff have you listened to? A lot of the stuff that's being cooked up these days is more interesting and progressive than the golden era boom bap classics. And seeing as there's plenty of retro thinking modern acts, I'd say it's a pretty unfounded decision, but feel free to prove me wrong. There's plenty of people who agree with you.

Welcome, SpecialCookies. I always enjoy thoughtful intro threads. Fruitonica has a point about the more modern hip-hop/rap. I enjoy the old school stuff, too, but through my own research and well, Music Banter, I've found some incredible talent in hip-hop nowadays. I hope we can help expand your horizons on this. As for country - it is hard to get into, and I used to hate it, too, but it's a matter of searching for the sound you like in that genre. I tend to lean more towards the sub-genres of country. Mainstream country has been off my list for quite sometime, but genres like Gothic Americana/Country opens my ears up to the often shunned genre of country.

One more thing - care to list some bands/musicians you're into? Again, welcome.

Thanks for the welcomes. =)
I live in Perth, call it my home. I've lived in Perth all my life, travelled a bit of course, but never really lived elsewhere.

I couldn't possibly name all my favourite artists, honestly far too many. But I could give you a handful from different ends of the music spectrum: NIN, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, My Bloody Valentine, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Disturbed, Regina Spektor, Mars Volta, Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt and I suppose RHCP would all be in my favourites or have made songs that I would consider extraordinary.

In terms of musical eras, my tastes stretch back to Alma Cogan, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley of the 50's (among a myriad of others who's names escape me). After that it's pretty much everything that was churned out of every production label, not forgetting self-produced albums and leaked demos etc... hehe.

I suppose I should give hip-hop a bit of a break. I can't quite pinpoint what created my disdain for the genre, maybe I just can't accept it's popularity when I see how other genres seem so neglected and overlooked (I believe that's called communism =p).

Unfortunately for country, I don't think I'll ever be able to tune into it's stereotyped image. There are a handful of artists with country style roots/influences however, those are usually few and far between. Perhaps it's the fear of being caught listening to country music that keeps me away!

^ Nice eclectic mix of artists there. And you're from Perth! No doubt you've heard of Karnivool, they hail from there. One of my favourite bands
