Default Newcomer to music in general

Hello, everybody! This seems like a delightful forum, if I may express an opinion at such an early stage as this. I don't really play anything, but I am interested in learning to play the piano. Actually, I am a high school student who's just getting ready to go to college. I see some of my friends play the piano and it really makes me want to play for myself. So since my birthday's coming up, I was considering getting a portable keyboard to maybe learn some songs with while over there. I like to learn by ear; I do have a piano at home, and I copied one song I heard on TV, if not roughly. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a 61-key board. I can't really find any cheap 88-key boards, and I was wondering if the reduced range is very much of a prohibition for mimicking songs. If there isn't a lot I can do with 61 keys, I don't want to pay $200 for one. Oh, by the way, my name's Regulus. A pleasure it will be to make the acquaintance of many, I'm certain.
