Default Newcomer to music in general

Hello, everybody! This seems like a delightful forum, if I may express an opinion at such an early stage as this. I don't really play anything, but I am interested in learning to play the piano. Actually, I am a high school student who's just getting ready to go to college. I see some of my friends play the piano and it really makes me want to play for myself. So since my birthday's coming up, I was considering getting a portable keyboard to maybe learn some songs with while over there. I like to learn by ear; I do have a piano at home, and I copied one song I heard on TV, if not roughly. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a 61-key board. I can't really find any cheap 88-key boards, and I was wondering if the reduced range is very much of a prohibition for mimicking songs. If there isn't a lot I can do with 61 keys, I don't want to pay $200 for one. Oh, by the way, my name's Regulus. A pleasure it will be to make the acquaintance of many, I'm certain.

Ah, not in particular. I do like Coldplay's Viva la Vida, if that says anything. I rather enjoy classical music as well.

Why, yes, the piano is my first. Actually, back in the days of my youth, I played the piano for quite some time. But I lost interest because I was lazy and didn't understand the rewards of hard work. So I quit. But, like I mentioned earlier, listening to my friends play the piano has rekindled in me the desire to make music.

It's good to hear that you've such a passion for playing the piano. I've been playing on and off since I was 12, and though I enjoy playing by ear and freestyling, there's a satisfaction in reading music. As for the keyboard - I've been searching around for a good one lately as well. I also desperately want an 88-key board, but I don't think it will limit me so much to get a smaller one because the possibilities seem endless. If $200 is what you can afford, I say go for it - as long as you have a board to play. You can always resell it and get a better one. As for bands you listed, what a tease! Only one? Second chance:

Get a sitar instead. You will get mad pussy if you get good at that. Just drug them and play for them. And eventually you wont even have to drug them
