Iced 02-09-2008 10:22 PM

By the way i'm loyal to my music so you cant change me like i said earlier you can only expand on my music taste :)

Predator 02-09-2008 10:30 PM

He doesn't need to go from bad to worse.

Predator 02-09-2008 10:36 PM

I was listening to country when I was introduced to the heavier sub-genres of metal. Just because someone likes one kind of music doesn't mean their tastes can't be expanded to include something entirely different. If he doesn't like it, fine, but at least the introduction was made.

Yes thats entirely true, but when someone wants to learn more music and asks for suggestions you try to find things they may relate to or similar to what there listening to. This isn't saying that dont like anything else, just that you can't just start suggestion something completely random/different that you like.

I agree with you though.

Ps. The metal genre has sooo much wasted talent. (mainly with screamo, hardcore, metalcore)

He did say that he likes rock. Metal is derived from rock and death metal from metal. It isn't to far of a stretch. He also never specified what genre he was interested in hearing more of. You will never really be able to expand your tastes if you always stick to the same things. I try to never close my mind to any music. I have heard a lot of crap that I hated, but I heard a lot of new stuff that I loved. It is all about hearing something new.

Reading over the first post again, he never even asked for recommendations in the first place. I blame Proggy.

Did you read the artists he likes? It's like someone's listening 50 Cent and you hand them an Aesop Rock album. Baby steps.

QFT

Predator 02-10-2008 11:45 AM

Just because you can't stand metal doesn't mean that there are rules prohibiting mentioning a death metal band to a hip hop fan. I like metal along with a good share of the earths population. I was listening to Garth Brooks in late 90's when I found a Morbid Angel album. That was the point that I switched back to metal.

Do I need to quote Suicidal again?

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 12:12 PM

Good for you. But do you actually think this person will like Death Metal?

This has nothing to do with liking or not liking metal, its about slowly adding to the type of music he listens to, not just throwing random genres at him. Come on brotha use your head.

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 12:21 PM

Yah, just because you jumped from Country to Metal doesn't mean your average music fan will.

Predator 02-10-2008 12:41 PM

Never know till you try.

I think that if this argument is going to continue, we should make a new thread. This is an introduction thread.

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 12:43 PM

True. On a final note, I think it can turn someone off from diferent music if the first example they hear is Death Metal.

If you go by this, then we may as well have everyone on Music banter shouting there favorite bands and genres at him when asking for new music.

Logic my friend.

Predator 02-10-2008 01:01 PM

Are you telling me that doesn't happen?

I think the point of MB is to communicate with people with other tastes in music. Learn about other genres and expand your tastes. Sitting around with a closed mind doesn't do much.

Iced isn't the one that first said he was interested in finding new music. Proggy is the one that said he needed a music makeover. More than anything, I was playing off of that. If you don't like metal, fine, don't like it. But you have no place discouraging anyone else from sampling it. I don't recall ever once saying anything about anyones taste in music being bad. I don't go around saying how bad something sucks. Keep an open mind, there might be something else that you are missing out on.

First off this has nothing to do with my or proggy's music tastes. Second your still not getting what either of us are saying. When showing someone new music, you dont just throw random stuff at them is our point. And this has nothing to do with metal, could be any genre.

Ex: If someone came here saying they love Electronic Music and wanted to learn some new music/bands you would START off recommending Jazz to them. Maybe first you would show them Trance, then Industrial Music, then Some Metal. See how it works, progress from one thing to another.

Ps. Neither of us are bashing your music taste Predator, i happen to like a good deal of Metal, just when recommending you don't want to overload the person with new stuff. Take it slow.

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 01:21 PM

Don't worry Predator, I'm a prog fan, I get a lot of the same **** metal fans do.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-10-2008 01:28 PM

You get shit for talking out of your arse it's got nothing to do with liking prog

Predator 02-10-2008 01:34 PM

Will you marry me Urban?

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 01:44 PM

Hence the many 'can't understand minimilism and feeling' comments I've gotten from you.

Iced 02-10-2008 02:09 PM

Wow did not know I was so easy to chat about :P. I thought of some more things to describe my music personality.

More artists I like:

Jordan Sparks

Chirs Brown

Ne-yo

Avril lavinge

Some artists I hate:

50 Cent

Three days grace ( Some people are too over obsessed with them, no offense to people who are.. But it makes me crazy)

Some rock bands i dont mind:

Garbage

Linkin Park (Actually have there new Cd and really like them as one of my fav bands)

But yes i am open to anything but deep rap and metal ( YES including heavy)

(P.S i will always think that Nelly furtado is my favourite singer)

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 02:13 PM

Doesn't really say anything more about your tastes.

Iced 02-10-2008 02:14 PM

Well is there anything that would? I thought that atleast that i liked linkin park was a bit of a good sign (**For you , i'm fine with my taste, but like i said atleast 4 times im open to expand on my taste**)

Iced 02-10-2008 02:16 PM

Oh yea and i like some Mika?

ProggyMan 02-10-2008 02:24 PM

Well, considering you only listen to stuff on MTV...I guess for a start you should listen to Otis Redding, The Beatles(Early stuff), stuff like that.

Predator 02-10-2008 02:28 PM

Seeing linkin park tells me that you might like getting into the bastard genre of nu metal. Not entirely a bad thing. Look up Static X, Disturbed, Slipknot and Korn. Not really my taste, but there are still a few songs I can stand. If you google the name and add "myspace" (like "korn myspace") you can find their myspace page that would normally have about 3-5 tracks. If you want to go further down to harder metal subs, let me know, I can recommend some pretty good stuff. I don't really care for hip hop, r&b or whatever its called, but I have a lot of rock and metal to recommend.

Yea thats a good point. Definitly check out Static X, and a new band i just started listening to Audiovent is pretty good. They are 2 brothers of the guys from Incubus. I don't think this genre is the best but definitely has a lot of stuff worth checking out.
