Thanks Moonlit, for your concern. Ultimately, I'm not literally trying to make him my pet instead of theirs, but as long as he's being left outside in winter, and at my house during the evening dinnertime hours, I'll give him a warm place to sleep in my porch, a bit of kibble, and some attention. He's definitely an attention whore cat, but he spends far too much time in my porch to be getting attention from all the neighbors. I like him and I'm concerned about his wellbeing, but he's not allowed in my house, and I'm not going to try and keep him from his actual owners.

I still think the harness is stupid though. They put a collar on him a couple of years ago and I found him limping in our yard with his hind paw stuck in it. I don't believe cats are meant to be contained, and I would never restrain mine or lock it in a house.

If you do secretly want to make him your cat, get a cat flap. He will know how it works

Having found the camera, I can now reveal our cat, at the age of about 3 months:

...aand two years later:

Had to carry him to the vet recently, he broke out of the cat box THREE TIMES. I felt rather vindicated when the vets couldn't actually get him back into the cat box, on account of him being the strongest cat they'd ever had to deal with. It was all rather bemusing, seeing as he's generally a very cuddly docile cat, that just so happens to be a massive ball of muscle.

Last time I took one of my cats to the vet for a scratched eye getting him in the box wasn't a problem. Getting him out again at the vets proved a lot harder. He ended up biting my hand and shredding the sleeve on my vinyl jacket. That's when the vet decided to keep him overnight and treat him after sedation.
