Gyil... Ghanaian music.
One of my professors just recently took a 3 week sebatical to Ghana and was able to learn about all the indigenous (sort of) music there, and I thought it was extremely fascinating. Specifically the Gyil (j-ee-l). It's a 3 octave xylophone type instrument with gourds fastened underneat to resonate, and it's tuned pentatonically. The songs that he learned were really awesome, and it's gotten me to want to study a bit more of the African musical culture.... is anyone else as fascinated as me?
