What is Indie, I heard a lot about it, but I'm not really sure what it is.....

Here's a thought; let's stop labeling music and fighting over what genre a certain band is, and start listening to whatever pleases our ears no matter what anyone thinks of it! ;)

basically indie rock is rock not associated with the mainstream culture...its hard to explain....basically it doesn't sound like modern rock/punk....look up anybody on matador records....there a big indie record company....ITS REAL HARD TO EXPLAIN, but it just is what it is....ill try to think of a better explanation

"Ex-girl Collection" by The Wrens. Sheer Brilliance. It seems as though Indie-Rock is independent rock music. It's not mainstream, and is probably better for it. That's the only explanation that I've got.

Indie rock can sound mainstream (take Kleenex Girl Wonder, for example, who sounds somewhat like a very nicely done boyband at times). On a purely technical level, all it takes to be an Indie band is to release work through an independent (hence 'Indie') record label. That said, the sound associated with the label 'Indie' is usually intelligent and guitar driven rock music - it has become more explicitly a style in the minds of many people. Regardless, the commonly accepted guideline for calling something Indie is still simply involvement in an independent label, and not any aspect of the style of the music produced.

Would you really consider Thrice to be an Indie band. They're definately more punk in my opinion.

My favorite indie song is 3rd Planet by Modest Mouse.
