Really liking the whole thing, had a couple of full listens now.
Convinced of the Hex, See The Leaves, Powerless and The Ego's Last Stand have grabbed me so far, but there's not really a weak track in my opinion. Great stuff! Quote:

I only downloaded them after figuring out I could merge them, so I've never given them a listen individually - though there is one track (track 6 I think) that seemingly consists of one track of music, and 3 of high-pitched noise (like the song Ventolin by Aphex Twin) - I edited the other 3 tracks out and the song sounds perfect. Apparently you can listen to different combinations discs and the tracks sound different (but still good), e.g. listening to 3 discs instead of 4 will be a different but still enjoyable listen. Dunno if that's true though.

Here is a good article on the album. Wayne talks a bit about how it came about.
I can't post articles I guess, but go to quietus .com and the put this after the .com: /articles/02818-the-flaming-lips-embryonic-track-by-track-review-and-wayne-coyne-interview |

The new album is fantastic, much better than At War With The Mystics. I've still yet to see these live, but I got my tickets delivered yesterday to see them on 16th November. Its going to be my gig of the year without a doubt.

Well, I love Embryonic. I can certainly say it's my favorite album by them. It's a very new sound for them, and considering their last 10 years of releases, completely unexpected. I have to say, I'm on my third listen right now, and it's getting better as I listen to each part of the music and grasp what's going on fully. Also, it should be noticed this is a very, very dark album for the Lips, much more than any of their previous releases. Even upbeat songs (Gemini Syringes) have a sound that is strangely foreboding and ready to return to the darkness, a lot like much of Pink Floyd's catalog. Fantastic album though and it may take my spot for album of the year and the best of their discography. I think I'd be in a huge minority saying that though.
By the way, I have yet to hear Zaireeka properly because I have no idea how to do it, and if anyone could get me a link of the merged tracks I would be forever in your debt. In fact, anyone want to trade that for Embryonic? |
