I'm not sure what you're into but I'm quite sure you will be happy with Daydream Nation. Very good album. By a very good band. I don't think Goo is a bad album. Its not nearly their best but its certainly not a bad album.

Goo is one of their more accessible albums, but it does have it's moments of experimentalism. If you're looking for a bit more noise you could check out Bad Moon Rising, it has a nice dark twisted vibe to it.

That's my SY fave.

I cannot believe that I didn't post in this thread yet. I mean, Sonic Youth is only my favorite band...of all time. Their music is the basis of my taste today, although it doesn't look like that always. I guess I spent too much time in the past talking and freaking out about them (like an obsessive fangirl), that I don't feel the need for that anymore. So that's why I forget there is a Sonic Youth thread here.

Heh, I ranked their albums in 'This album > that album', but that seems to change often, except for EVOL, always in the first place. But, I have to say, I love their early period the most.

EVOL > Confusion Is Sex > Bad Moon Rising/Daydream Nation > Washing Machine > Sister > A Thousand Leaves > Sonic Youth > Goo > NYC Ghosts & Flowers > Rather Ripped > Sonic Nurse > Murray Street > Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star > Dirty > Eternal

I didn't include SYRs. Speaking of them, I haven't heard anything after SYR 5. For shame. And so...

Can't recommend SYR 7/SYR 8 enough. Good drones, good noise, mmmmm... Their studio albums from the 80s to early 90s are treats on their own, sure, but after that, the SYR series is where I get all of my kicks from new Sonic Youth.

All right, going to find them now.
I also love their late 90s period, Washing Machine and A Thousand Leaves along with SYR 1 and 2. And NYC Ghosts & Flowers is pretty underrated. It may not be among their best work, but it's kinda unique, transitional in a way. 'Free City Rhymes', for example, is among my favorite SY songs. But, I agree, after that, while still good, 00s albums are just not that strong and essential like their earlier ones.

Have you heard Silver Session for Jason Knuth? Pure guitar feedback noise and yet somehow pretty atmospheric. Powerful stuff.
Here's a taste for those who haven't heard it. Vintage Sonic Youth!

I'm shocked that you consider DDN on par w/ BMR and that you like WM more than Sister. I do appreciate the high ranking of CIS, though.

^Well, trying to look objectively, I believe Daydream Nation is a better album overall and it presents the high point of previous development of their sound towards more rock friendly music. But, I love Bad Moon Rising more with all its flaws and searching in the dark. It's a transitional album, rough around the edges, not knowing always where it's going. But that makes it all the more daring and I find that fascinating. That's why I couldn't decide which one to rate higher.

And yes I like Washing Machine more than Sister (not much more though) and that's purely subjective. I can't quite explain why. I guess I like Sonic Youth more when they are less rocking and more psychedelic.

Actually I like Dirty. The only album I don't like is Eternal. But the thing is I can't remember the last time I listened to it. I used to like it more back in the day, but never as much as their other albums. Well, I guess it could switch places with Experimental Jet Set, except I have a soft spot for that album, although I think Dirty is better. Like I said, this list always changes especially towards the end where I don't have strong feelings for those albums. Maybe if I listen to Dirty now, it can move up the list, ahead of those 00s albums, depending on the mood and nostalgia.
