Built To Spill

Your thoughts, feelings, reflections on this legendary and wonderful band?

hookers with machineguns 08-13-2005 05:28 PM

*shakes head* A shameless, shameless promotion of BTS.

j/k. I have a bunch of their songs on my PC, even if I don't like their style of music at all. "Car" has been on my playlist for sometime :)

puddin 08-14-2005 05:55 AM

They're ****in legendary.
Perfect From Now On is one of my favourite albums, the songs are just orgasmic, I Would Hurt A Fly especially so. My only complaint about them is that the singer's voice can get a bit annoying sometimes.

Twin Falls is my favourite song by them.

swim 06-07-2006 09:50 AM

bump.

I love Built to Spill theyre awesome. Keep it Like a Secret is my favorite album. They make me smile.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-07-2006 11:25 AM

They make me puke

R Chestercombe 06-09-2006 07:16 AM

Stab,
is one of the most amazing
tracks, yet to be composed.

explosions-in-my-pants 07-15-2006 05:31 PM

Just heard and started listening, liking this band these past two days... very good easy listenings, the songs flow very well together.. enjoyable.. good stuff indeed.

boo boo 07-15-2006 11:24 PM

Other than being a big influence on one of my least favorite bands of all time, i think they're alright.

Their singer needs to shave really badly though.

Love BTS, don't love the new album.

swim 12-05-2006 03:32 PM

^I think You in Reverse is catchy and I like it a lot.

sleepy jack 06-04-2007 06:53 PM

There's Nothing Wrong With Love = heaven in album form.

Bane of your existence 06-05-2007 08:22 AM

I heard them in a movie the other day.

Mar-Vell 06-07-2007 08:21 AM

They are good, but I feel I have outgrown them. Anyone feel like me?

sleepy jack 06-27-2007 05:49 PM

Yeah, check out "You in Reverse", "Ancient Melodies of the Future", "Perfect from Now On", and "Keep it Like a Secret".

Those are definitely my favorite albums.

They put out a live album a while back and they did a really cool rendition of "Cortez the Killer", which I thought was cool because the Young influence has always been present in Doug's exposition. Check out "Wherever You Go" from "You in Reverse". There's definitely a "Ohio" vibe....at least in the instrumentation.

hope that helps.

Sneer 07-27-2009 04:21 PM

Cleo is an awesome song

Davey Moore 07-28-2009 02:53 PM

For some reason the only album I like is Perfect from Now on, although I consider that to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

haha I love that album. However, I don't know if I'd go that far.

"Randy Describes Eternity" and "Stop that Show" always put me in contemplative moods. It's a great album to listen to when you're alone in your car, driving long distances.

And if you listen to it with good, in-ear headphones you always hear something new. BTS has a great sense of space-management.

They put on a great live show, too.

Yoni 07-28-2009 10:48 PM

Built to Spill is one of my favorite bands ever. Perfect From Now On is by far their best, it's what Built to Spill is supposed to be. It's the one album where everything came together in these spacious, changing, contemplative masterpieces.

Keep it Like a Secret is also one of my favorites, it's Built to Spill's pop album, while still maintaining their fractured indie rock aesthetic and spacious jamming.

And I felt like There's Nothing Wrong With Love was the blueprint to Keep it Like a Secret, and also the blueprint to Modest Mouse's existence.

sidewinder 07-31-2009 11:37 AM

I have nothing really to add, just expressing my support for Built to Spill since the thread was recently resurrected.

There's Nothing Wrong with Love, Keep it Like a Secret, and Perfect from Now On are all so stylistically different it's hard to pick a favorite. It really depends on my mood, but I find myself coming back to There's Nothing Wrong with Love more often than the others. Perfect from Now On sometimes is a bit too depressing and it can seem too long.

Ancient Melodies of the Future and You in Reverse are good but for me not on par with the other 3.

Really? I felt like "You In Reverse" was one of their best. "Going Against Your Mind" has got a great pace to it, and "Traces" was one of their best tunes, compositionally speaking.

I can understand "Ancient Melodies" though. I read an interview with Doug a while back where he admitted that he wrote all the lyrics for that album in order to fit the instrumental parts he'd already written. But "The Weather" is one of their best, lyrically.

"Keep it Like a Secret" is my favorite right now. The whistling on "Broken Chairs" is strangely energizing.

Really? I've never found Perfect From Now On to feel too long. I think There's Nothing Wrong With Love played the blueprint to Keep it Like a Secret, and it's also surely one of Isaac Brock's favorite albums. Do you like Elliott Smith? He did a pretty neat cover of Car, minus the stupid drum.

I'm of similar thoughts regarding You in Reverse and Ancient Melodies of the Future. I like them, but they don't keep me coming back for more.

New Built to Spill album coming out this fall, guys. It's called "There Is No Enemy."

I do agree with this, I love "The Weather".

Totally agree. When I first got into Modest Mouse (Lonesome... and Building Nothing...) I likened them to a combination of BtS and Pixies. I'll check out that Elliott Smith cover in a bit. I like a few of his songs but he's not someone I listen to.

Been patiently waiting for it. ;)

lucifer_sam 07-31-2009 11:04 PM

i've been revisiting these guys for the past few hours at my friend's behest. definitely holds up much better than a lot of the older indie stuff i used to listen to, Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like a Secret are sheer classics.

i'm pretty upset now knowing that i missed seeing Doug Martsch like eight times in the past few years (and from what i hear, he's fucking electric).

swim 07-31-2009 11:21 PM

Chapel Hill date, yes yes yes. Doug Martsch has never let me down, ever.

I heard he draws his strength from his epic beard....almost like the Green Lantern draws power from his ring......

I think it's safe to say that Doug looks like that guy that just never got over Nam.

HEY! The new album, There is No Enemy, came out today. It's rare these days that an album's release date comes along and no one's been discussing a leak. I've been anxiously awaiting it, have not heard it, and I'm picking it up after work. Can't wait!

On the other hand, I'm not very excited about one of the ugliest album covers I've seen in a while.
