Unless the artist has some obviously unique quality, I think the specific appeal is something you discover eventually after listening to them for a while. I think most who got into Oasis simply did it on the strength of their singles which were, as you say, fine simple rock.

I've always been a closet Oasis fan, one of my biggest regrets of the 90's is that I didn't bother to see them live because I was to busy following underground acts, like John Spencer, Massive Attack ect.

I can understand if people don't like them because they're bland corporate rock, but Noel Gallagher's songwriting talent shouldn't be underestimated, his recent solo releases have been topping the UK charts for a reason.

...and quite frankly I miss pop stars who could write their own music, you wouldn't hear a song like the one posted below on the top 40 today.

...downloading killed the rock star.

His latest album is actually pretty good.

Loved the televised show they did where Liam bailed at the last minute and Noel had to sing all night while Liam sat up in the balcony watching.

I find it kind of ironic people hate the Gallagher brothers for their 'arrogance'. All they do is talk up their own band and are outspoken about what they think of others, if I was in a band I'd be exactly the same way. Most people who meet them say that they're nice guys, especially Noel.

Compare that to Blur where it's well known that Damon Albarn treats the people around him like shit and it was him that initiated the whole Blur vs Oasis thing with NME editor Steve Sutherland, and when it backfired and Morning Glory outsold The Great Escape by a huge amount anybody who bought up the subjects in interviews he would either refuse to talk about it or walk out.

That's what you call a real prick.

Not to forget their Nardwuar interview.

William_the_Bloody 05-14-2015 04:27 PM

Lol, that is a classic interview, I worked with Nardwuar on one of his radio shows for a bit back in the early mid 90's.

Super nice guy, but back then he had a reputation for shifty interviews, I remember when Skid Row beat him up and stole his took at an old club in gastown, so Blur was probably just on edge with all the rumours.

Anyhow back to Oasis, although I was generally opposed to a lot of corporate rock back in the day, now that I'm older I see how important it is to have popular mainstream rock acts just to keep the genre vibrant. Underground scenes tend to fade away without some measure of commercial success.

True story

When Mogwai just started out they used to sell 'Blur Are Shite' T shirts through the classified ads in Melody Maker.

I find it hilarious that so many people hold Oasis to such a high standard when it comes to originality. If these people are so bothered by a band they think is derivative, then shouldn't they also hate 99% of all the punk bands in existence? Or the vast majority of bands in any other sub-genre? At least Oasis have a sound of their own that you can't really mistake for anyone else. I could give a **** how original they are. All I know is that they are a fantastic power pop band who I'd be thrilled to listen to inbetween Big Star and Cheap Trick.
