It's an acquired taste for sure. It took me a few listens before I was hooked. Milk Man was the album that did it for me and I've been a big fan ever since. Of course, if you're not into the whole spastic disjointed thing, it's probably not for you. The live show is an onslaught, and like Sweet Jane said, the drumming is outrageous.

Default Deerhoof

have you heard of this band?
my friend lent me their CD 'Runners 4' which i first i didn't like, i thought they were just showing of their musical prowess (cause they are goodz.. especially the drummer)
But once i got used to their sound. all the initial chaos i couldn't distinguish became beautiful. they truly follow their own vibe which is kinda (And this is a stretch) like Sonic youth, in the sense that all that Noise/W.Noise form a solid groove. idk, that's just my opinion

(Btw, Noobs can't post pics!? WTF!)

I think I've only heard the Runners Four, which was a bit hit or miss for me.

i don't think i've ever listened to a proper Deerhoof album....i did see them live and seriously they were awful....it could have been a bad night for them....but it was really bad and somewhat pretentious.....and the crowd was even worse

idk maybe i'll check out this album

I go back and forth on Deerhoof. When I first heard Runners Four years and years ago I loved it. Then, as I started acquiring more of their music and started throwing them on the iPod, I found her voice to be more and more grating.

Now, I go through spats where I can't stand the band, then a pretty song comes up on shuffle, and I dig through the albums for a bit until I realize that mostly, her voice is just too grating for me. The music itself is wonderful all around, it'd just be better as a goddamn instrumental band.

Runners Four is without a shadow of a doubt their best, I'd say. Reveille and Milk Man are decent too. Other than that, meh.

I think Satomi's vocals work well as an additional instrument from time to time, but I tend to agree that the rapid time-shifts are the real compelling aspect of Deerhoof's music. They are truly just four people who, together, manage to sound fantastic together. Beyond the first album, there are few tunes from the band I dislike, and they just seem to keep getting stronger with age.

Whenever i show someone this band they tend to say the same thing

"i don't like her voice it's too high pitched"

i happen to like her voice and how she structures all the chaos that is deerhoof into lullabies

it's quite genius i think.. the way she does that.
i have only listened to runner's 4 and friend opportunity i didn't know they had 11 albums!
