The Indie Bar Kid 07-13-2005 06:02 AM

Editors

For the third time in my life here on earth a band has given me multiple orgasms. Yeah OK it sounds like the cover of the Sun, but its true. Their first three singles have been jaw-droppers (if you look carefully there’s a jaw-groove on my bedroom carpet…If you look even closer you’ll see other stuff, so don’t) and Munich has to be one of the tracks of the century thus far. If I can get through the album without erupting from the inside out in a bizarre pleasure-induced implosion it will only to come back and write threads on every song decrying their brilliance.

So, anybody else having the same palpitations, or are these just another low-class Joy Division tea-leafers?

Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go keep Kleen-ex in business…

Imonlydancing 07-13-2005 07:39 AM

oooh, they're playing round the corner from me soon, i think i'm gonna go, should be good. yeup.

Sneer 07-13-2005 10:50 AM

sorry to talk sour grapes but i think everything they havedone so far sounds exactly the same. i wouldnt say they rip off division as much as interpol but lets just say their hardly original.

_The_Repeats_ 07-13-2005 01:08 PM

The Editors are playing at the Oxfordshire Truck Festival lovie, along with The Magic Numbers and a few other decent bands. Gosh, I do hate people who don't like bands because they sound like other bands...

Sneer 07-13-2005 02:19 PM

why? because they appreciate originality?

_The_Repeats_ 07-14-2005 07:00 AM

No, because it would be impossible for every single band to sound completely different. Anyway, if you like the sound of one band, why not like another because it sounds similar?

Sneer 07-14-2005 09:23 AM

because sometimes i cant help thinking the band sounding like the other band have no creativity of their own. we all like music for different reasons and personally im a big fan of originality. that doesnt mean i dont like completely cloned bands- i dig interpol and the subways after all.

adidasss 07-19-2005 03:47 PM

hmmmm..listening to them right now on nme.com ( and someone said it's a sucky-suck website...tisk tisk )....and i have to reluctantly say they sound exactly like interpol ( well their first album anyway )....interpol are being accused of sounding too much like joy division but i have to disagree, their sound is a lot different from joy division...but these guys rip off interpol in such a fashion it's criminal....
still it's descent stuff.....maybe it's a slow burner... like arcade fire....so far i wouldn't say i'm blown away like i was with interpol.....maybe that will change...

IndiElectronica 08-05-2005 07:22 AM

love this album.. Especially the songs 'Blood' and 'Fall'.

Seeing them in a couple months at Oxford Zodiac too...

I'm bumping this thread to get opinions on the new album, In This Light And On This Evening. I was very skeptical when I heard the band was leaving their traditional sound to feature more synth/electronic influenced music, but after hearing the album I really can't complain. To me they went from sounding like Interpol to sounding similar to Depeche Mode, which I can't really complain with. I will say the title track on the new album is hands down my favorite song they've done, just that little plinking bass in the background with the deep vocals over it was great (at least for me).

This is the only Editors thread I could find (there were threads with discussion about Editors but this was the only thread devoted specifically to Editors).

indienerd 10-13-2009 07:17 PM

If you consider Interpol and Editors as Joy Division ripoffs, please disregard every band with boys in it as a ripoff of The Beatles. Thanks.

Grotesque Head 10-13-2009 07:25 PM

The difference there, is that being men in a band has no bearing on what the band will sound like, whereas copying Joy Division (which I'm not accusing them of) would.

As for Editors, never a big fan - the first 2 tracks on the new album are pretty good, but the 3rd song (the single) is dreadful. Haven't yet got around to listening to the rest of the album.

music_phantom13 10-13-2009 07:56 PM

I wouldn't say The Editors are ripping off anyone exactly. In fact, I quite like In The Back Room when I'm looking for some new post punk. That said, my criticism of the band would be that there is not a lot of diversity in their catalog pre In This Light; they were certainly not doing anything that could be considered original or particularly creative. In This Light just didn't work. I was hoping they would get more interesting, but they didn't. Oh well.

Dee Eye Why 10-18-2009 07:45 PM

The fact that I love Joy Division makes them less awesome to me, but there's still some awesomeness left over. Good band.

SCOUT 10-23-2009 12:20 PM

No, no, no. Editors make terrible albums. They're fine musicians and clearly have great taste in music - main influences being Walkmen, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen - but they try too hard to be something they just aren't.

Their debut 'The Back Room' was good. Several great tracks there.. but their last two albums have been shocking. Apart from the singles, which are ok for the dancefloor, it's all absolute dross.

chrissygerraty 11-12-2009 05:30 PM

I honestly can't say that I'm very fond of their sound. I have attempted to listen to their records on multiple occasions and even paid to go see them live out of curiousity. I was sadly let down and am still surprised that their generating any sort of buzz. My cousin sent me a clip and interview from their live show in Bucharest (she lives there) and it only confirms my thoughts. The guys just seem to lack passion behind their eyes for what they do and it is completely reflected in their live show.

I love the new album. I wasn't sure if I would, as it sounds quite different, but it's brilliant. I really like that it's short, there's no filler tracks so I don't get bored listening to it and not get to the end as with some albums.

They're really good live, too.

Great band, check 'em, give some feedback!

right-track 02-22-2010 05:35 PM

Are you referring to the pale imitation of post punk Joy Division?

Naytahn 02-22-2010 05:38 PM

Sorry, I don't know who that is....

Me or Joy Division?

Either way, you're no friend of mine!

jackhammer 02-22-2010 05:45 PM

Editors are OK and at least they do point people in the direction of their influences and get people delving into more Post Punk. Generally they do rip off Joy Division but I do like this track a lot which doesn't sound too much like JD:

You want to hear JD rip offs? Former Ghosts take the biscuit:

But it does sound like Elbow.

Ghostsaregoodcompany 02-24-2010 04:23 AM

I recently went to see The Antlers, and The Editors were the headliners for the show. I wasn't impressed. I got their album In this light and on this Evening and wasn't a fan. I thought maybe seeing them live would change my mind but I stuck around for three songs and then decided to head home. I just don't see there appeal.

Stinkfist 03-04-2010 04:48 AM

An end has a start is editors out interpoling Interpol, great track.

Newkie 07-12-2013 06:50 PM

Have to admit, I loved The Back Room when it came out and while I wasn't too fussed on their other output I still gave it a listen. Just heard "The Weight of Your Love" which was release a few weeks ago, very disappointing even though I wasn't expecting much.

Rather than Interpol or Joy Division they now seem to sound like U2, and not even like the few decent songs U2 actually turned out when they were trying to sound like Joy Division.

Editors - A Ton Of Love (Official Video) - YouTube

Ok so I picked the chorus for obvious reasons, but Smith's voice, the lyrics, **** it the whole song sounds U2 inspired. Anyone else get that?
