I'll vote off The Cult and Sisters Of Mercy.
I'd suggest R.E.M., The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. I also second Gang Of Four.

Definitely second R.E.M. I love the other choices, but I'm not sure if they would be what OP is going for?

I don't know, the margins seem very wide. There's everything from Noise Rock to Industrial in the OP. The three bands I put forward fit the typical 'Alternative' dynamic better than most. As for Gang Of Four, if PIL and Joy Division are included, they should be - because they're the best of the Post-Punk bands.
