The Pixies Vs The Violent Femmes
I thought i should make a thread about 2 bands i know and love
The Pixies http://www.snapgalleries.com/userfil....png?width=400 Vs http://www.metroactive.com/papers/me...emmes-0531.jpg The Violent Femmes Both similar yet totally different bands, i thought i'd match them up cause they are both equally good, i honestly can't say one band is better than the other i can only say i prefer one over the other. And ofc, i choose The Pixies but not by much, if the Pixies never existed the femmes would be my favorite band. i personally chose the pixies cause to me they are more diverse than the femmes, in the sense that they explored different music like surf or psychedelic music, i know the femmes experiment too but i prefer how the pixies do it. Regarding vocals i dare say Gordon Gano is a better singer than Charles, i luv his redneck voice, it ranges from very satirical to very soulful. |
Pixies by quite some distance.

I really can't stand Violent Femmes at all (and I feel really bad about it :(), so my vote kinda defaults to Pixies even though I'm not huge on them either.
I've only heard VF's self-titled so far, though, so maybe I'd like their other stuff a bit better? |
I love the Femmes but I'll go Pixies as well. Better songwriting, more diversity, and I still get goosebumps at certain songs to this day. Silly, but it counts for a lot with me.

Here are a few tracks from other albums |
I vote for the Pixies.
It's tough because I prefer the first two Femmes album to any Pixies work, but I also enjoy every Pixies album, which I can't say the same for VF. Consistency gets it |
ouch, wasn't expecting that.
|
call me weird...but the only Pixies album i really enjoy anymore is Doolittle....whereas i still listen to most of the Violent Femmes stuff....although in all honesty not often
i also think i just have much better memories associated with Violent Femmes....the first time i smoke weed was at a Violent Femmes/B-52s show :).....if you put their self titled album on right now i could probably sing every word to every song without any thought just taste and timing i guess |
It's also cause that is a very good album Bob that album sets the tone of the band perfectly, it's a well made album especially considering it's their first one.
|
I like Violent Femmes a lot but their career has been pretty hit-or-miss, mostly miss honestly. So Pixies all the way for me.
|
Pixies here too. Surfer Rosa was their first album, btw. Not Doolittle.
|
VF had an amazing bassist though. Kim was great too but had a completely different style.

I'm not really sure why these two bands are even comparable.
|
Bigger fan of the Pixies for sure.
|
I voted for The Pixies. They're awesome :)
|
Violent Femmes because they own my heart but honestly Pixies are probably more deserving. Still.
|
I don't know much by either band, but I voted for the Pixies because I rather like what I've heard, and I'm going to get an album one of these days. I'm unsure about The Violent Femmes. Black Francis, you seem like an intelligent fellow. ;) Where should I start with the Pixies?

If you like raw and loud music i suggest you start with 'Come on pilgrim' and 'Surfer Rosa' if you prefer a more polished alternative sound i suggest 'Doolittle' And if you prefer something more mellow i suggest 'Bossanova' OR You can try their 'Death to the pixies' double cd which is like a best of, the 1st cd has their studio tracks but the 2nd cd is all live tracks and they sound amazing! that live cd is why i became a fan of the band starting with the track 'Hangwire' (Dat bassline <3) This is the version they used for that Live cd. Hope you like them and also give the Violent femmes a shot too they're a great band. |
I'd probably go with the Pixies, too, though I'd add that the Femmes debut album probably means more to me than any album the Pixies put out. I see it as a sort of rite-of-passage album, where it finds you when you're a sexually frustrated teenager and speaks directly to that frustration. It's one of the great "I feel mixed up" albums of all time.
Eventually you grow up and you no longer share that state of mind, so the bite of the record wears out a bit. But when I put it on today, I can remember when I walked around feeling like the character in "Add It Up" and "Confessions" and even "Good Feeling". I'm glad I can't relate as strongly to it now, but there's no question it expresses something real. It's a remarkable album. That said, I've never heard anything else by the Femmes that hits so hard, whereas every Pixies album is great in some way. I'd also argue, like most of us, that the Pixies had the greater lasting impact. |
It appears I am a rare breed voting for The Violent Femmes over The Pixies. I know one complaint regarding VF is that a lot of their songs sound the same. I respectfully disagree. There is a different tone as some are sarcastic and fun, while others are soulful. Out the Window and Good Feeling are two of my favorites. The entire Add It Up album is solid. I have seen these guys maybe five times in concert and they are super fun. I am glad they are back together!
