I don't know much by either band, but I voted for the Pixies because I rather like what I've heard, and I'm going to get an album one of these days. I'm unsure about The Violent Femmes. Black Francis, you seem like an intelligent fellow. Where should I start with the Pixies?

If you like raw and loud music i suggest you start with 'Come on pilgrim' and 'Surfer Rosa' if you prefer a more polished alternative sound i suggest 'Doolittle' And if you prefer something more mellow i suggest 'Bossanova' OR You can try their 'Death to the pixies' double cd which is like a best of, the 1st cd has their studio tracks but the 2nd cd is all live tracks and they sound amazing! that live cd is why i became a fan of the band starting with the track 'Hangwire' (Dat bassline <3) This is the version they used for that Live cd. Hope you like them and also give the Violent femmes a shot too they're a great band.

I'd probably go with the Pixies, too, though I'd add that the Femmes debut album probably means more to me than any album the Pixies put out. I see it as a sort of rite-of-passage album, where it finds you when you're a sexually frustrated teenager and speaks directly to that frustration. It's one of the great "I feel mixed up" albums of all time.
Eventually you grow up and you no longer share that state of mind, so the bite of the record wears out a bit. But when I put it on today, I can remember when I walked around feeling like the character in "Add It Up" and "Confessions" and even "Good Feeling". I'm glad I can't relate as strongly to it now, but there's no question it expresses something real. It's a remarkable album. That said, I've never heard anything else by the Femmes that hits so hard, whereas every Pixies album is great in some way. I'd also argue, like most of us, that the Pixies had the greater lasting impact. |

It appears I am a rare breed voting for The Violent Femmes over The Pixies. I know one complaint regarding VF is that a lot of their songs sound the same. I respectfully disagree. There is a different tone as some are sarcastic and fun, while others are soulful. Out the Window and Good Feeling are two of my favorites. The entire Add It Up album is solid. I have seen these guys maybe five times in concert and they are super fun. I am glad they are back together!
