Does anyone else feel...

Like Coldplay are the critics darlings and they are getting much more hype for an album with no digression from the original template. I saw a review that said "if they release 5 more albums like this they'll be dismantling Atomic Bombs."

First of all, At least U2 changes things up a bit, but if they aren't the epitome of over hyped critical acclaim whores, then I've clearly missed what band is.

Perhaps this is my agenda against them but if I have to focus to figure out where certain instruments are in the mish mash of noise, then I figure whatever you are playing was that good in the first place.

Am I alone?

I`ve felt like that about them since I first heard them in 1999.

I almost feel that back then some faceless record company exec decided Coldplay were going to be the next big thing & ever since then it`s been a constant barrage of airplay ,TV & people falling over themselves to say how great they are.

Personally I think they`re one of the dullest bands i`ve ever heard

SATCHMO 06-01-2005 02:53 PM

Coldplay are what music critics want music to be: overproduced cathartic garbage

Sweet Jane 06-02-2005 04:54 PM

You are so not alone.

I knew U2 and Coldplay would be all over these Live 8 concerts around the world too. Damn they piss me off.

TheBig3 06-02-2005 10:38 PM

Live 8 Concerts? You mean Live Aid?

Trauma 06-02-2005 11:12 PM

It just goes to show that if you get enough media coverage then you're going to be big.
I think U2 is the most successful ROCK band out right now.
I mean I tried to name some that might beat them but there weren't any.
As for Coldplay....I would say Chris Martin has a unique voice, or it could just be the English accent I'm not used to.
Although he has to be unique to name his child Apple, ****ing whacko.

Third Grade
Kid: Hey what's your name?
Apple: Apple.
Kid: Apple????
Apple: Yeah, my dad said it meant magic in ancient Indian culture...
Kid: What's that thing you have?
Apple: The pet plastic bag my dad gave me and named Moon, it means tree in Hungarian.
Kid: Get the **** away from me.

Sadly, it would be funnier if it wasn't true.

you people are so full of shit...coldplay is huge because they're great, not because they're overhyped, overhypeing might help a band in the begining but people usualy pick up on the fact that they're not good and then they fail miserably...the fact that coldplay's x&y is the most expected album of the year and is number one on amazon.com and .co.uk in presales means the FANS can't wait for it to come out...(the'yre not buying it because the media says it's going to be good, but rather we ( the fans ) think that it's going to be great on the basis of the previous two albums, if we ( the people who buy music) thought the first two albums sucked we shure as hell wouldn't be buying this one...)
so to sum it up, there is no amount of media coverage that could help a band that's not really good...

Yeah I agree with most of that stuff too, the only problem is you didn't address everythign correctly. No one said COldplay makes music like Wolf Eyes does (unlistenable), we just said they arne't as good as their made out to be. And Im siding with Hatemonger because alot of there stuff bores the crap out of me.

They are given a melody and some Thom Yorke flavorings, and then every coldplay song is shipped out to the masses. Its somehting they can all swallow. They are not as good as the press says they are, they are a really good bar band who gets multimedia backing.

AprilMay 06-03-2005 07:46 AM

I used to be able to tollerate Coldplay but now they are everywhere and I have heard their new song a million times which leads me to my new opinion on Coldplay, I hate them with a passion.

the best way to judge a band is through album sales. and if we're going to measure how good coldplay are by sales then they are a very good band. of course the media hype them up- they do it to any socio-freindly band with a guitar and drums. but the fact is your saying their not as good as their made out to be- thats a subjective statement. i happen to like coldplay ,i dont love them but i do buy the albums.

nobody sells over ten million albums just on the basis of media hype...the media hyped franz, bloc party, the killers and the bravery and the arcade fire....non of them sold that many albums...coldplay does produces music that agrees with a wider range of people but it's undisputed that it's excellent music...people won't just buy an album because the papers told them to do so...like i said before if an album sucks or is so-so, people catch up on it very fast...to use an analogy with movies..all the media coverage in this world didn't help Alexader the great by oliver stone to become a succes...

shandapanda 06-06-2005 03:23 PM

thank you. although it does seem like it but unless you're a really sad and loney teenager trying to get accepted or something similar you can tell what you do and do not like. coldplay is not the only band that's been over-played.just because a band is over-played doesn't make them bad all of a sudden.i hope you won't give up on coldplay based solely on that, aprilmay(unless you didn't like them before, then i doubt i can turn you).

Cut them some slack! Chris Martin is a dude, his songs are beautiful. They are actually a very good band who make very good listenable songs with mass appeal. The danger in becoming so popular is 'overkill' and that's what has happened to Coldplay and U2 and many other bands I'm sure.

Sometimes you find people will dislike a band because they are 'popular' which really sucks if you ask me.
