Mylo Xyloto - What Happened To Coldplay?

Parachutes was an alright album. It was also a debut album.
Twelve years later the world's biggest band should have grown from this right? Wrong.

Okay, A Rush of Blood To The Head was absolutely brilliant so why is it that a group who are receiving critical acclaim and multi-platinum sales would dumb down their music for commercial appeal? Dear Lord Chris, is this really what Bono would do? Well yeah, X & Y was standard pop music, which isn't always a bad thing but in the case of this LP it certainly wasn't a good thing: dreary, lackluster, repetitive, safe. Safe being the key word here, as X & Y was a commercial super hit, but many fans and critics alike, me being one of them, were left underwhelmed at not only the fact that this album was so drastically inferior to its predecessor, but also at the fact that with an album which was three years in the making, Coldplay failed to realise the prospect of creating something so much better than what X & Y turned out to be. It had some great hooks! The album certainly has its moments but as a whole its just one track looped thirteen times over the only difference being the increasingly cheesy lyrics.

Hey its 2008! Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends redeemed the misfire that was LP3, but it still wasn't the classic Coldplay's abundance of fans had been waiting on. Nevertheless it was a really good album, and it should keep us satisfied until the next release, which will be in three years time based on the rate of release the band usually abide by. This was the case indeed, and in 2011 Chris and friends defecated Mylo Xyloto onto shelves. Princess of China... seriously? I honestly thought they were taking the piss when they announced they were collaborating with Rihanna. But they weren't. Bar a small few tracks the album was legitimately awful.

The worst part is I actually enjoyed actually liking a radio friendly rock band, and furthermore I liked defending Coldplay when people down talked them. Oh well, three more years I suppose.

Coldplay are awful and always have been. Music for those who don't like music

I like In My Place and maybe one or two other songs back in the day, but I wouldn't say anything's happened to them. Well, they've gotten worse, but they were never that good to begin with imo.

I feel your pain.

I agree with your opinions of all the albums, though I feel like they're not gonna redeem themselves and are only gonna go downhill from now, cos I think they've just lost interest in making albums like A Rush Of Blood now.

I'm actually part of a Coldplay forum (yeah yeah, laugh) and Mylo Xyloto is nearly always a topic of satire, but the discussion always meddles down to this: Coldplay have said that this is the first time they were genuinely happy and confident with something they put out. (I forgot the article I read this from but I can find it and send it to you if you want) Would you rather have a band put out something that we, and most other REEL ALTERNATIVE RAWK fans are content with, or would you rather the band be happy with themselves and the art they create?

If you think about it, you just argued against your own argument: you'd rather them create something that they wouldn't have all their passion in, for the sake of pleasing an audience, which is the exact definition of selling out. Pretty philosophical stuff hah

Well, to be fair, I'd say there were a fair few albums by plenty of artists where they may well have hated creating the album, hated certain songs, and hated each other and been disappointed with the end result-but the fans weren't-I don't think that has anything to do with a lack of passion.

But this is only conjecture, as I don't give a **** what Coldplay do...

Don't agree with all the hate Coldplay get. Their first two albums were both good. Sure, they're far from the most amazing band in the world, but I thought Mylo Xyloto was a great pop album...

It's ok Coldplay but not really special (and I am sure many people agree on my opinion),
Not really developing musically is a problem because it must be so boring for them to play songs which are not really different sounds from their first album....anyway when I lived in Belsize Park(a couple of years ago), his house was just in the next street and saw him often! so yeah nothing happen he is just a rich musician who enjoys life.

It seems like a normal thing to just hate on Coldplay. I like them, I don't give a ****.

This.
After bands become very successful it seems hard to find real inspiration again: you stick to your style, knowing people will come to your shows anyway and radio/tv will stream your music.

It happened with every big modern band, maybe only Radiohead still do high quality songwriting.

Zohar 01-07-2013 09:42 AM

Coldplay? Meh. Maybe a song or two once in a while, not any more.

Cinnamonics 01-07-2013 10:53 AM

I don't think they're worse now than they used to be, even if they went pop with their latest. I like some material from all their eras.

Black Francis 01-15-2013 07:09 PM

what happened to Coldplay?

Clocks happened lol

that stupid song was everywhere.. >_>

i never liked Coldplay enough to take them seriously but in my opinion i think it was their success that changed them..

in the sense that ppl kept expecting all their songs to be hits, expecting the same magic every past hit had.. that pressure could ruin a band but if you wanna make a good living as a musician you have to write hits

in a way they established a signature sound that ppl really liked..
and most bands that do that if they deviate from that sound ppl go "where's the Coldplay i know and love?"

it's very hard to measure the artistic depth each band has..

some bands run outta steam and can't keep producing good songs like they used to, other bands no matter what they do are considered geniuses cause you sense their artistic depth.

in my opinion Coldplay although talented musicians have become just another mainstream band cause the ppl have made them so and never had too much artistic depth to begin with.

Even though Colplay is my favourite band I still have to make a statement here. Okay, Mylo Xyloto may have been not what you had expected when they released the album. But bands change their style all the time, and I dont think that this is a failure by Coldplay. It is a reason that they have won several awards for this album. And beeing at the Mylo Xyloto tour changes your perspective on the album. Colors, fast rythms and LOTS of lights is just brilliant. And I think that idea with singing Princess of China with Rihanna is great. Rihanna is one of the most succesfull musicians out there and she sings great and Coldplay is one of the best bands out there. But YES the other albums from Coldplay have been excellent, but I think this is the best yet.
