A lot of people say it's their least favourite BSS album, and I can kinda see why. It's very sonically dense and a bit more experimental (ie, less accessible) than their other albums, but with enough listens this album becomes amazing.

I can understand Silent Alarm but I thought Intimacy was only so-so.

Perhaps I have misjudged it? Should I re-listen?

1. Libertines - Up The Bracket
2. The Crookes - Hold Fast
3. Peter Doherty - Grace/Wastelands
4. Baxter Dury - Happy Soup
5. The Maccabees - Colour It In
(I think)

Some interesting choices here. I much prefer GIVEN TO THE WILD to COLOUR IT IN though.

Libertines "UP THE BRACKET" though- good call!

Andrew Bird - and the Mysterious Production of Eggs
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Calexico - Carried to Dust
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Sufjan Stevens - Come on Feel the Illinoise

It's tough to come up with 5, and tough to feel comfortable with what people consider Indie.

It's just Illinois, and it isn't spelled with an e at the end.

No, it's Illinoise. It's stylized and a pun!

Dude, yes it is! Look at the top of the album cover. Or should I highlight it in red for you? You are just digging this hole deeper and deeper!! :)

I liked Silent Alarm, but am I missing something? I didn't think A Weekend In the City was all too great. Just wondering why you liked it more than Silent Alarm.

it all boils down to personal preference i suppose, Kelli :)

Bloc Party are one of my favourite bands so i absolutely love Silent Alarm, but Weekend just grabs me more. Hunting For Witches, Waiting For The 7:18, Uniform, are just some of my favourite songs. there is a certain strength to it i don't find so noticeable in Silent Alarm. to me, this record is flawless.

same thing with Arcade Fire, i guess. most fans of the band would say Funeral is their best, however nothing beats Neon Bible for me. apparently, i go against the tide a bit :)

that said, i seem to enjoy every record Bloc Party put out. whatever style they choose to adopt, they always do it well.

Ok then. I get what you're saying - don't get me wrong, there were songs on A Weekend on the City that I really liked ("The Prayer," "On," "I Still Remember") but overall I don't think it's as good as their other albums. I ought to relisten to it and maybe I'll find out why it could be someone's favorite. xD

On the other hand, I think that all three Arcade Fire albums are solid and equally good. I'm part of the majority who likes Funeral the best though, mostly because it was the album that got me into indie rock.

I actually also love A Weekend In The City. It's one of the rare albums that didn't go well with the critics or the fans, but I surprisingly really enjoyed it. Worthy follow up to Silent Alarm. And then Intimacy was released... Biggest disappointment of my life.

a friend of mine was telling me the other day how his Bloc Party favourite album was A Weekend In The City before i even mentioned it. that means there's at least two of us in the world ;) yeah, give it a go. maybe you'll find something that appeals more to you this time. then again, maybe not :)

surprisingly, i also love Intimacy. i agree it was quite an unexpected album but it grew on me over the time and i reckon it's a solid album. i can see why it would be considered a disappointment, though.

I'm surprised with all the Bloc Party mentions in this thread, even before this recent discussion. I never got on the boat with them, didn't care much for the singles I heard I guess. I also don't consider them indie rock.

Zer0 03-12-2013 05:21 PM

I find it funny that people are listing albums released over a decade ago, or even albums released over a decade apart.

baconisyummy 03-17-2013 11:39 AM

tough choice but i think (not in order):
1. In Rainbows- Radiohead
2. Modern Guilt- Beck
3. It's Blitz!- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4. Silent Alarm- Bloc Party
5. Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What I'm Not- Arctic Monkeys
