Ben Folds

Whats the general position on him? I ask this mostly because he's not so well known here in the states and since we have a alrge brittish pop, I was wondering if he has ocean crossing appeal.

Someone lent me his new CD, and the song "jesusland" (which sounds like "Ill stand by you") is pretty great. His work with Ben Folds Five was pretty good I think, and he's slowly building his own catalouge. Potential?

TheBig3 05-12-2005 11:32 AM

::bump::

Answer the damn question

Imonlydancing 05-15-2005 12:26 PM

yeah, potential, i've heard one song, i liked. i think theres already a ben folds topic....possibly.

toby the Hipster 05-16-2005 07:46 PM

I have a decent enough collection of both Ben Folds and Ben Folds Five,
and I get the impression that he offers a sort of pop-rock, almost Ben Kweller-esque sound.

However, I'm not sure if his appeal what one would consider 'ocean crossing,' but I'm sure it would catch on quite nicely were word spread.I

TheBig3 05-17-2005 06:37 PM

Where are you from Hipster?

toby the Hipster 05-19-2005 08:40 AM

I'm in Portland,
and know several people here who listen to Ben Folds.

TheBig3 05-21-2005 12:15 PM

Is portland a city in England. Cause there are at least two in the States, in Maine and Oregon which are on the opposite side of the country. I'm unaware still of where you are from.

And yes this is still relevant, I want to know about populairty and reach.

toby the Hipster 05-21-2005 05:42 PM

Porrrrtland Oregon.

Spike*Spiegel 12-27-2006 10:18 PM

meh, i, not so much into his piano happy sound but i loved Brick.

NaNaNer 12-28-2006 07:43 AM

I like him. When he first came out I got totally made fun of for listening to him..but he made me feel good..

_Spinning_ 12-28-2006 03:23 PM

Quite enjoyable at times.

Not something I can listen to non-stop though.

NaNaNer 12-28-2006 03:38 PM

No way..but in small doses can do the trick.

Raine 12-28-2006 07:42 PM

My favorite song is Bastard. It's kinda funny the way he sings it.

Laces Out Dan! 03-22-2007 08:26 PM

i've got songs for silverman and its really good..what do you think his best albums are?

itoldyouso 03-23-2007 01:08 PM

Of his solo stuff? My favorite is Songs for Silverman. And then Rockin' The Suburbs. His Ben Folds Five stuff is absolutely amazing, too. The 'Whatever and Ever Amen' CD is so good. Probably my favorite out of everything he's done, solo or with the band.

Laces Out Dan! 03-23-2007 01:40 PM

Alright, i'll download the Ben Folds Five album.

Laces Out Dan! 03-24-2007 08:21 PM

Soo, i really liked the Ben Folds Five album...ALSO, we can officially blame Ben Folds for Korn..The singer from Korn said they decided to make a band because the Rock music in America was Ben Folds..i'll try and find the actual quote again sometime.

EDIT: Found it.. When Jonathan Davies was asked why Korn had formed he replied that he was sick of American rock music being "Fucking Ben Folds Five".

LAAAAAAAATE(l)

Oh, Elliott.

Laces Out Dan! 03-24-2007 09:15 PM

That song is definetly in my top 3 Ben Folds songs.

itoldyouso 03-25-2007 10:21 AM

Glad you liked it. So, Korn is the only bad thing that's come from Ben Folds... ever. Aw. I guess that I'll forgive him.

Joey's Guide to Ben Folds Five B-Sides and Rarities

Songs For Silverman is the only album I have, its really sick. Lates my favorite song then probably Gracie after that. Scott sent me some Ben Folds Five it was sexy.

Mouseketeer 03-26-2007 07:08 AM

Ben Folds is more poplular over here? I don't really think that's the case and he is from the States, isn't he?

I have the Supersunnyspeedgraphic EP, which I believe is a collection of smaller CDs put together. But I'm not too sure on the details, correct me if I'm wrong. I particulalry like 'There's Always Someone Cooler Than You' and the Divine Comedy cover. Although generally it's a pretty sweet album.

itoldyouso 03-26-2007 03:52 PM

Yeah, it's stuff from a few EPs... Super D, Sunny 16 and Speed Graphic. My favorite is "Learn To Live With What You Are"... at least, ever since I saw the video.

...love your avatar, Mouseketeer.

Mouseketeer 03-26-2007 04:27 PM

Thanks, I like your... blank space.

The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner was pretty good. Dare I say? Proggy?

mandown23 03-28-2007 10:35 AM

im prolly gonna go see him opening up for john mayer - kinda excited

Kevorkian Logic 03-28-2007 04:26 PM

He's fairly popular around my school, especially after he had a concert where I live. A lot of my friends like him, because they feel "cool and alternative" when they listen to his music. The only song that I ever paid much attention to was the cover of "bitches ain't ****," it was one of the funniest covers ever done in my opinion

Laces Out Dan! 03-28-2007 04:46 PM

He's not very popular at all at my school...almost nobody knows who he is. Also..everyone at my school is stupid music wise.

itoldyouso 03-28-2007 07:10 PM

Yeah, he's not too popular here, either. A few people like him. There was this kid in one of my classes wearing a Ben Folds t-shirt, once. A few years ago.

Sparky 03-28-2007 08:42 PM

the only song i got is "bitches aint ****"

Same here, but a good number of the people in my school suffer from thinking they know everything about music and listen to cool music, but actually knowing nothing and listening to ****.

Literally, a girl in the senior class wrote in her college essay about what a huge music freak she is, and is so unique in her taste. But honestly her music is a carbon copy of another guy in her grades. Her college essay ended up being, in mine (and a few others who knew her) opinions, overly pretentious and extremely false and hypocritical.

I prefer people just not caring than fake caring.

Nathan Explosion 04-06-2007 07:31 PM

I only know two other people that are into Ben Folds, and he is probably in my top 5 favorite artists. I think he should get more credit than he gets.

Laces Out Dan! 04-06-2007 07:31 PM

I think so too.
