I am totally always going to refer to them as The Pixies from now on.

Rainard, you should probably ask Black Francis and Kim Deal to stop referring to the band as "The Pixies" as well.

If you call a band "Pixies", there doesn't seem any more point in referring to them at The Pixies than there is in referring to Queen, Slayer or Metallica as "The Queen", "The Slayer" or "The Metallica".

Saying that, I understand why people do it: because, as a title noun in the plural, one is inclined to see it as referring to the band members. So, if each one of them is a Pixie, then together they are Pixies, and also, in the definite, The Pixies. So it's not totally nonsensical. Same deal with Arctic Monkeys. It seems that Arctic Monkeys is a reference to the band members: each one is an Arctic Monkey, so together they are The Arctic Monkeys.

But it only works if that was the intent behind the name. If "Pixies" was not supposed to refer to the band members but to actual Pixies, e.g. in the same way that Nirvana refers to a philosophical concept, then calling them The Pixies would be idiotic.

But if you are correct in saying that the band members themselves refer to the band as "The Pixies", then I suppose that shows their intent and leaves no further room for argument. :)

It's Pixies! It's the name on the side of their ****ing cd's! For once I don't give a **** in a graveyard on what Thom Yorke and David Bowie consider to be the correct name for the band, or even that fat cracker Frank Black.

Funny, I got none. Do you have no pop-up blockers?

Yeah why would you care what Thom Yorke and David Bowie have to say on the subject? But like I said to Rainard, you should probably tell Frank Black he's calling his band by the wrong name. Kim Deal too. Apparently she had/has a habit of introducing them as "the Pixies" at shows.

the problem is, they shoulda just called themselves the pixies in the first place if that was their intent. intentionally omitting to have the "the", and it must have been intentional and with some particular reason in mind (because it is against what is conventionally done with plural noun band names), suggests that they wanted it to be called just that: "pixies", with a "the".

they probably shifted in their own referential use over time when it turned out that everybody else called them "THE pixies".

Piss Me Off 02-09-2009 09:04 AM

There's nothing wrong with calling them the Pixies but there is with The Pixies. There you go. See also: Ramones.

ixtlan22 02-09-2009 09:56 AM

I love both Pixies and The Pixies. I'm a huge fan of both bands. I think they sound too much alike each other though...

Or maybe they always referred to themselves as "the Pixies" but just thought "Pixies" by itself looked better on an album cover or tee-shirt or poster.

current favourite Pixies song: BREAAAAAAAAAAAK MY BODY!

sidewinder 04-20-2009 11:23 PM

Uh so...maybe there's a new Pixies album coming out this year?

what the hell?! if that is true then wowwwwwww. awesome. if its not true then im pissed at you for getting my hopes up.

DReills84 04-21-2009 01:55 AM

I'd have to go with Surfer Rosa to be honest, I love it.
Though doolittle is a very close second. They're both amazing albums.

Fave tracks are probably Debaser and Broken Face!

DReills84 04-21-2009 01:56 AM

Anyone listened to Frank Black's new band's stuff? I'm not a massive fan.

It is common for bands to leave out the ''the''. Not everybody likes to stick with convention.

Take ''Doves'' or ''Kaiser Chiefs'' for example.

sidewinder 04-24-2009 11:46 AM

Misfits, Descendents.

shoegazer 04-27-2009 06:12 PM

I'm really liking the song La La Love You.

The Creature in the Sky 09-24-2009 06:27 AM

Pixies

My personal favorite alt. rock band. From the grungey, warped sound of "Dead" to the punkish "Crackity Jones", they never sound the same twice. Without them, we would have no Nirvana.

My personal favorite of their songs is "Monkey Gone to Heaven". What about you guys?

zeppy111 09-24-2009 07:23 AM

I can't believe the Pixies never had their own thread before, they definitely deserve one though.

Favourite Album: Doolittle
Favourites song/s: Gouge Away, Monkey Gone To Heaven.

Zer0 09-24-2009 02:20 PM

They're playing 2 dates in Dublin next week and they're both sold-out :( *sniffle*

Best album has got to be Doolittle, i never get tired of it. Surfer Rosa, Bossanova and Come On Pilgrim aren't too far behind either. However i could never grow to like Trompe Le Monde, it's just pale in comparison to the other records.

storymilo 09-24-2009 02:45 PM

I only have Doolittle but off of it my favorite songs are Wave of Mutilation and Debaser. And did anyone else notice how different Here Comes Your Man was from the rest of the album?

Zer0 09-24-2009 02:57 PM

Yeah it sounds so different from the other songs on the album yet fits so nicely into it. In fact there's no other Pixies song that sounds like it.

My favourite songs would be Gigantic, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Velouria, Dig For Fire, Here Comes Your Man, The Holiday Song, I've Been Tired and Gouge Away.

I don't think that is true, I have gone though a phase were I was convinced that Doolittle is the best, Surfer Rosa was the best, and Bossanova was the best, (I have never been too into Trompe Le Monde) so I think it is really which mood you are in.

Dig for Fire is definitely one of my favorites. It's also a good one to send to people who've never heard the Pixies. It's got their flavor but is easy to access. It's hard not to like it. :hphones:

how in the hell is surfer orse overrated? who exactly is overrating it?
