grammatically speaking a plural word doesn't always need to be preceeded by "the" it depends on whether you're talking about a specific group, or just a plural representation of the object in general terms. If I made potatoes, and you were eating them, I'd ask you if you liked "the" potatoes. If I wondered whether I should bother making them, I'd just ask you if you liked potatoes (in general). Black Francis (or Frank Black now...) weren't referring to a specific group of pixies when selecting their name, so it's ok for them to say "pixies" as a reference to the mythological creature in general terms. Or, they could call themselves, "The Pixies", because by taking on the name, they become a group of pixies, in a sense. The same issue arises often with bands like Eagles and Talking Heads. I think it also serves as a way to separate true fans from casual listeners. Don't semantics make your head spin sometimes?

To me saying "do you like pixies?" is asking me whether i like little mythical creatures with a mischeivous streak, if you were to say "do you like the pixies?" id consider you to be asking me about the group. "beatles" sounds wrong, however, "the beatles" sounds right, because the "the" is a way of differentiating between the actual object and the group.

tdoc210 01-14-2007 12:41 PM

beetles is the correct way of spelling it,
better example would be bauhaus

swim 01-14-2007 12:43 PM

It doesn't matter if sounds good to you or not. It's not your desicion. If I made a band I am a elephant. Calling I am an elephant is wrong. Like I said months ago, sorry for being a nazi. You say do you like the band Pixies.

cardboard adolescent 01-14-2007 12:48 PM

So, do you guys like the Pixies?

Sneer 01-14-2007 01:14 PM

its my choice on what i say though, and i always have and always will call them the pixies.

Wow...I've never heard that comparison before. I guess it's kinda fair (though they're really not all that close). As in: Pixes are to Pavement as the Stones are to the Beatles...or something like that. In their loose style of delivery they're similar bands, but they make their homes in completely different territories when it comes to the tone of their content. Introducing someone to Pixies, I'd probably go for the easy Nirvana comparison. Since both bands take pop structures and twist them to become darkly abrasive, and Nirvana had a collective Pixies obsession which seems to have played a big part in shaping their sound. They also sound like Sonic Youth circa EVOL which was like Sonic's goth album...when they were in slightly sinister mode.

What if I said "Do you like Pavement?" in that case, if I added the "the" you'd think I was toalking about the object.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-14-2007 01:46 PM

Yeah but a pavement is a single object , while Pixies are pixies plural.

Sneer 01-14-2007 04:26 PM

pixies and pavement :usehead:

Moon Pix 01-26-2007 12:19 PM

After the first two albums and that ep whats to like?

Chien Andalusia 01-26-2007 01:55 PM

If you couldn't tell from my name I love the Pixies. I have Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. Doolittle is a masterpeice. I never got to see them live but I heard they had so very Loud Concerts.

Favorite Song would have to be "Hey". "if you go i will surely die
we're chained"

He also puts biblical references in his songs. You can tell he was very in to the Old Testament.

poloboy23 05-06-2007 09:49 PM

one of the greatest bands of all time, support the pixies!

Loser 05-07-2007 02:51 PM

I've heard a couple of songs from the Pixies, and I liked it very much i'll keep an eye out for an album of there's :)

Bossanova and some of Trompe Le Monde

Kevorkian Logic 05-10-2007 02:30 PM

I love their consistency of quality. Yes, there are some albums that are better than other albums, but none of the albums suck so bad that I have the need to delete them from the computer, unlike many other bands that produce that amount of records.

I didnt get anything out of either of those personally.

effervescence 05-15-2007 03:24 AM

I absolutely love them - there was a period when I played nothing but Surfer Rosa - and I was so glad I got the chance to see them when they reformed last week.

bardonodude 05-19-2007 09:01 AM

I really like "There Goes My Gun"

thedividedsky1 05-19-2007 12:46 PM

The Pixies are a classic band. Some of my favorites are Where is My Mind?, Allison, and Tony's Theme. Ah, I would love to see them live.

Rainard Jalen 04-22-2008 02:28 AM

Cripes, I am just totally IN AWE!!~!11 at how good Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are. How the hell do you make records that good!

Also, this band's influence upon Nirvana becomes so evident from listening to both records.

Which of the two do people think is the better record? My personal viewpoint lies firmly on the side of Doolittle.

Zer0 04-22-2008 02:56 AM

Doolittle is def the best album, all the great songs are on it like Monkey Gone To Heaven, Wave Of Mutilation and Hey. My next fav would be Bossanova, Joey's guitar work is just awesome on it. I'm not a big fan of Trompe Le Monde though, the songs just aren't good enough.

mightyprojet 04-22-2008 06:38 AM

I`d rank the albums like this:

Surfer Rosa
Doolittle
Trompe Le Monde
Come On Pilgrim
Bossanova

Piss Me Off 04-22-2008 08:06 AM

If i'm allowed to be cheeky and put Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim together like on the CD then that would be my fave, easily.
I have a lot of love for Trompe Le Monde too, its nice and loud and Frank's screaming has always been the best part of the music for me, he outdoes himself on The Sad Punk.

sweet_nothing 04-22-2008 08:24 AM

i never really understood the pixies, but i do love 'gouge away'

flufff 04-22-2008 08:52 AM

Huge fan of the Pixies, one of my favourite bands....

Favourite album has to be Doolittle with Sufra Rosa coming a very close second...

Favourite song would have to be a toss up between 'Debaser' and 'Where is my Mind'

Neither did i before i got into them, when i was younger i just didn't get it. But as soon as i picked up Doolittle it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

viv. 04-23-2008 10:07 AM

I'd rate them:
-Doolittle
-Surfer Rosa
-Bossanova
-Come on Pilgrim
-Trompe le Monde (only album that never grabbed me)

Haven't heard the live album. Doolittle was a kick in the face when I first heard it... Amazing album. Everything aside from Trompe le Monde is essential (though I know lots of people love it).

it's just personal preference

I realise the influence they've had, especially on even more influential bands like Nirvana

Ok fair enough, but in that case then surely it'd make more sense to say "not a mediocre band, but I don't like them."

favourite album without a doubt- doolittle.

all their songs are quality. Doolittle is easily the best album

sl1ck 05-02-2008 08:37 PM

Pixies are one of my favorite bands, and my most listened to artist on Last.FM by far. I love Alternative music, and it doesn't get any better than the Pixies.

I would agree with many of you that Doolittle is their best effort, with Surfer Rosa and Bossanova close behind. Trompe Le Monde is a great album, just not a classic like the others. I think if they would have limited the number of tracks to 11 or so on Trompe Le Monde that I would hold it in as high regard as I do the other albums.
